This bird was high on our list during Hubli birding on December. I had planned to go solo from Bengaluru but happy that 2 of my friends were able to join to this trip from Bengaluru. I got 6 amazing lifers along with this one. This is one of the near-cosmopolitan species, i.e., its seen all around the world except Australia and Antartica continents. The population that migrate to India must be from Europe and USA sees a different population migrating there though same species/nominate sub-species as per Wikipedia.

Though we saw good number of individuals of this species, it was difficult to photograph this bird because of their superb camouflage that allow them to blend in any kind of green or grassy habitat. They even can hide in the trees which are not that thickly covered with leaves. Inspite of superb camouflage, they were very shy and used to flush out before we spot them. Finally found one individual that let us go this close for a long time. It was kind of sentinel I guess.

Thanks Kushal for a wonderful birding experience.

This was shot in outskirts of Bengaluru, within a protected forest reserve. An unusual and uncommon species on the fringes of this ever-growing metro city.

We were on a bird survey with forest guards walking on small swamp under a canopy and spotted this at almost end of our beat/transect. Suddenly a guard leading our group stopped us indicating he saw some bird. Within few seconds, a large raptor flushed from the right-side of our path. Trying to figure out what it was, I saw the raptor flying to tree top and then dive down into the canopy again, showing its tail which was fan like. Its tail and whole of chest was brownish. I guessed it was black eagle.

We took 2 or 3 steps and then another large bird flushed out. It settled on a nearby tree. And then to our amazement it was this Brown fish owl. So started to take photograph and put down my lens to check the camera settings. Almost immediately all in the group started shouting 'eagle! eagle!' I got confused about what it was about and then I see Black Eagle mobbing this owl. Damn it! I missed the golden opportunity to capture the amazing natural history of the rivalry between these two predators.

Eagle is diurnal while the Owl is nocturnal. And the owl attacks chicks of large eagles and sometimes even the adult eagles themselves. Owls also hunts most other birds. So owls have lot of enemies. They have perfect plumage to let them blend with variety of habitats according to what the owl specializes and are tough see them in open during day time. If they are spotted during day time, other birds such as raptors, crows, drongos, etc. mob them till they escape to cover themselves.

Most snipes are expert in camouflage. Have seen this bird in many places where they are notoriously difficult to spot unless you are a regular birder to such landscapes or you flush them out. But in Pallikaranai, things are different. Here these snipes have less chance of hiding. Yet they manage to hide behind grass blades sometimes.

Even in summer month when we visited, these wetlands are having murky waters that is covered in green grasses across the large swathes of what is collectively known as Pallikarnai Marshland. Its in southern parts on Chennai city, but actually in Kanchipuram district. Birding in this part of Chennai is quite a different experience and we had good time birding there.

A big thanks to Rama Neelamegam for birding assistance there.

Note: Pintail snipes and Swinhoe's snipe have notoriously similar and over-lapping morphological features and so are difficult to tell apart. Some refer to these two as 'Swine-tail' instead. Therefore I am using 'cf.' notation while mentioning scientific names to say that ID is not fully confirmed.

Saw this tiny raptor multiple times on our recently concluded Manas birding trip. After seeing it for two times on very top of tall trees, I thought I would not see this one up close like this. We were lucky to see this very close finally at Mathanguri very near to Bhutan border. Very bold bird and smaller than Mynas in size. Flight pattern felt similar to that of Ashy Woodswallows.

Finding rare bird species has been passion among the birding community for long time. For a "noob" in birding, the rare bird list is very long. Over time that list shortens. For some birds which are not actually rare becomes tough to spot after repeated attempts as they are skulkers, i.e., the birds that are reluctant to come out in open or are busy foragers under the thick tree canopies or bushes. There are other birds which are restricted to particular geographic region and if they are skulkers then it becomes really difficult to spot.

In case of Kashmir Flycatcher, their population has really gone down drastically and the IUCN organisation has assigned the status of this bird as 'Vulnerable.' So I place it under this ultra-rare series. This bird is related to and very much similar in behavior and calls of Taiga and Red-breasted Flycatcher. Though I have seen it at Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, this bird has been reported from ever-growing silicon valley of India, i.e., Bengaluru. Maybe it visits some of the IT campuses in the city, you never know!

There are many other birds that is similar to Kashmir Flycatcher in terms of declining population in South India: Laggar Falcon, Indian Vulture, Eurasian Oystercatcher, etc. List is very long. Some birds adapt to new changes. But some struggle. Some that struggle now might adapt and recover in future. Hope the Kashmir Flycatcher recovers well along with other struggling birds to new changes in habitat of this planet. All they need is just place/s to breed, migrate, feed and strive.

“Here’s the pitch on George Hughes’ cover painting . . . Big Ron ordered a tankful of gas for his car and is mortified to discover that he hasn’t a dime to his name. His chums weren’t able to lend him enough. Will the Scrooge who operates the station let Ron leave the premises to borrow money from his father? Not on your life; he wants his $4.07 now and no back talk. The moral of the story: have your old man’s credit card with you at all times.” – The Editor

Lou looks like the kind of guy who’s been around long enough to know every bolt and gasket in a flathead V8. That blue uniform and stern posture aren’t just for show. He’s not just guarding the pump; he’s guarding a code. In his world, a deal’s a deal, and $4.07 is sacred.

But whether he would take apart Big Ron’s hot rod is another matter. That car isn’t just metal and chrome. It’s pride, rebellion, and the dream of speed stitched into every part. Lou might grumble, might threaten to pull the carburetor out with his bare hands, but deep down, he knows what that car means to those boys. He sees the posture of Ron’s friends, the way they hover near the vehicle like it’s a shrine. Lou’s not heartless—just principled.

Still, if Ron mouths off, Lou might just pop the hood and start itemizing parts like a repo man with a wrench. The moral might shift from “carry your dad’s credit card” to “don’t underestimate a man who’s lived through three recessions and still wears a pressed uniform.”
