....is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western part of the contiguous United States. With a surface area of between 191.5 sq mi (496 km2) and 197 sq mi (510 km2), it is slightly larger than Lake Tahoe. The lake is a remnant of the ancient inland sea, Lake Missoula of the era of the last interglacial. Flathead Lake is 27.3 mi (43.9 km) long and up to 15.5 mi (24.9 km) wide. Its known maximum depth is 370.7 ft (113.0 m), making it deeper than the average depths of the Yellow Sea or the Persian Gulf. It is one of the cleanest in the populated world for its size and type.

Apparently the bark on this fallen tree was having a rough winter thus far. It was odd enough to take a picture of. The north end of Flathead lake, always something interesting to find.

I took numerous shots of the orchards but most were very similar as much as i tried for different ones. I liked this one because as far as you look the trees just keeping on going! Love that color against the blue sky too. Very uplifting to me! Have a great day all! Back to work...at least my hours have been shortened due to Fall hours cut back with all of us. But I wish my job would slow down...it never seems to!! lol...:)

Flathead Lake is easy on the eyes any time of year, but when it’s lined with cherry blossoms it’s extra special. The lake is surrounded with orchards, and the cherry trees are in full bloom early to mid-May. You’ll find the most spectacular orchard views along State Highway 35 from Polson to Bigfork.

The Chippewa National Forest (originally the Minnesota National Forest) was established in 1908. It was the first National Forest to be established east of the Mississippi River.

Often overshadowed by its younger but mighty sibling, the Superior National Forest (est. 1909), the Chippewa has more lakes and wetlands than any of the other U.S. National Forests.

For more information, go to the U.S. Forest Service's Chippewa National Forest web page.

Flathead Lake lies at the southern end of a geological feature called the Rocky Mountain Trench. The trench, which formed with the Rocky Mountains roughly 60 million years ago, extends north into the southern Yukon as a straight, steep valley, which also holds the headwaters of the Columbia River. During the last ice age this trench was filled by an enormous glacier. As the glacier moved southward it carved out the trench. Present day Polson, Montana marks the southernmost extent of the glacier during the last ice age and thus is the site of the glacier's terminal moraine.

The large size of the Polson Moraine indicates that the glacier stalled here for several years before retreating. As the climate warmed, a portion of the glacier in the Mission Valley receded more slowly than the main body, which kept the lake basin from being filled with sediment. Eventually this ice also melted, forming a lake behind the moraine. Once the water reached the top of this moraine dam, it began to cut a channel through it. Most moraine dammed lakes drain quickly because water cuts entirely through the moraine. However, Flathead Lake remains because a bedrock hill buried underneath the Polson Moraine prevented the moraine from being completely cut through so the meltwater never completely drained.

At one time, probably when the valley was partially filled by a glacier, the level of Flathead Lake was about 500 feet (150 m) higher and drained through the valley west of Elmo, Montana which is at the end of Big Arm Bay, bottom center in the aerial photo above. Water carved out a wide, flat-bottomed pass with a deeper, narrow channel at the south edge of the pass. The deeper channel and traces of the dry riverbed are still visible from Route 28

One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

I'm not really sure what made these tracks. Something that obviously was dragging it's feet while moving through the snow. This one is a view looking off towards Flathead lake from the snow covered beach. A very nice place to walk in the evening.

Captured on Thanksgiving Day, where my late, great dog and I took a mini-vacation in place of over-eating with a small group of friends, when we toured the string of lakes that lie in the Swan Valley of Northern Montana, east of Flathead Lake.

Lake Inez was our third stop of the day, traveling up Route 83, and the natural beauty was both simplistic and overwhelming here. It was so quiet, you could hear the snow fall. Cold, brisk, clear and sharp. And I was correct in my assumption. We had the valley, and all the lakes all the way up to Bigfork, completely to ourselves.

Thanksgiving Day can be celebrated in a myriad of ways, all of them valid and meaningful if they serve to elevate the spirit and one's sense of gratefulness and gratitude. This marvelously serene day was fully in that category.

This area was over by one of Sam's jobs near Bigfork, MT. It's one of those areas that is totally jaw dropping...this trip I was really happy with the reflection images I got.....and those are the Mission Mountains in the background.

Well back to work tomorrow. They talked me into working this Saturday....on my birthday!!!!!! That is really rotten...oh well a little extra pocket money is always nice! lol....:P Large view is nice :)

After a prolonged absence of Flathead Nessie sightings, the lake’s elusive monster may be out there after all. That’s what Pam Moriarty, her daughter Laura Barthrop and Justin Lagemann are wondering after the trio viewed a strange object swimming against the current about 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 12.

From the picture windows in Pam cliff top home on the northwest end of Finley Point, they watched for about five minutes as it swam northeasterly away from shore toward the main part of the lake. They were so surprised that Pam briefly forgot her camera was nearby. She rushed to retrieve it and managed to snap a picture, but it was too far away to identify.

Lagemann estimated the object was about 40 or 50 yards off shore when they first noticed it. They watched through binoculars and afterward he sketched how it appeared to him. He thought the critter was at least 25 feet long. The head was not showing as it moved away, but it had a “whale-like tail” and “spiked dorsal fins.”

Lagemann had lived in Florida and had seen many types of unusual aquatic animals – manta rays, alligators, crocodiles and more. He couldn’t tell what this was though.

A scene I captured along Flathead Lake's east shore highway....it's a campground near Bigfork, Montana and quite a nice one! :)

Have a blessed Sunday all! :)

My current desktop background. I really like the calmness of this view. That and the soft colors. The ice on the lake shore was a lot of fun to walk along. Of course, I had to be careful that I wasn't walking on any ice shelfs that could break off into the lake.

Flathead Lake, Montana

Great details viewed large.

An unexpected Spring snowstorm that blanketed NW Montana.

Once known as "Salish Lake", this body of water takes its name from the Salish (Flathead) Indians who live at the southern end of the lake on the Flathead Indian Reservation. Kerr Dam, near Polson, regulates the lake's water level and provides hydroelectric power and water for irrigation. The lake has an irregularly-shaped shoreline and a dozen small islands, the largest of which is a state park called Wild Horse Island. These islands cover 5.5 square miles (14.2 square kilometers). Besides the Flathead River, the Swan River (known also as the Bigfork River where it enters the lake) is the lake's other major tributary. The lake is inhabited by the native bull trout and cutthroat trout, as well as the non-native lake trout, yellow perch, and lake whitefish. It is also reportedly inhabited by the infamous Flathead Lake Monster.

a nice little spot on my way to work.

It's a nice place without the snow I swear. Of course this area is several feet under water come summer time when the lake is at full pool from the spring runoff. Winter creates some unique spots along the shore of Flathead Lake. I saw this gem while wondering along the beach yesterday evening, happened to take a few shots. I've always liked this tree and it just happened to line up nicely with these footprints I found. The beach is always a cool place in the winter time when the water from the lake is down and you can go anywhere. Very serene and peaceful when you have it all to yourself.

Horne’s was a mostly Southern restaurant chain operating primarily in the 1950s-1970s. At its peak, there were 60+ locations. There’s one Horne’s still open, in Port Royal, VA.

Took me awhile to recognize this for what it is. Couldn’t quite recall which chain used this style of building, but after looking at photos of other former Horne’s, there’s no mistaking that that’s what this used to be.

It’s in an online list of Horne’s locations as being in Big Fork, VA.
