This was a foggy night on the lake as the Moon creates a steel blue hue across the waterscape. Heavy fog layers in to create a shroud holding in the light below.
A combination of humidity and smoke from forest fires father to the west, created hazy atmospheric conditions that changed the look of day-to-day scenes.

A viewing point at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore overlooking Lake Michigan and the famous Dunes.
Some of the earliest human inhabitants of the Lake Michigan region were the Hopewell Indians. Their culture declined after 800 AD, and for the next few hundred years, the region was the home of peoples known as the Late Woodland Indians. In the early 17th century, when western European explorers made their first forays into the region, they encountered descendants of the Late Woodland Indians: the Chippewa; Menominee; Sauk; Fox; Winnebago; Miami; Ottawa; and Potawatomi. The French explorer Jean Nicolet is believed to have been the first European to reach Lake Michigan, possibly in 1634 or 1638. In the earliest European maps of the region, the name of Lake Illinois has been found in addition to that of "Michigan", named for the Illinois Confederation of tribes.
Lake Michigan is joined via the narrow, open-water Straits of Mackinac with Lake Huron, and the combined body of water is sometimes called Michigan–Huron (also Huron–Michigan). The Straits of Mackinac were an important Native American and fur trade route. Located on the southern side of the Straits is the town of Mackinaw City, Michigan, the site of Fort Michilimackinac, a reconstructed French fort founded in 1715, and on the northern side is St. Ignace, Michigan, site of a French Catholic mission to the Indians, founded in 1671. #7DWF

Clock is Ticking
The colors of a Thomas Hill empty are obvious against the browns and greens native to the Sand Hills in September. The colorful sets have long been recognizable as THH trains and are currently some of the longest coal trains that run on BNSF. In general, it’s hard to complain about much here. It was supposed to be cloudy, but clearly it is not…yet. More importantly, I have a train to shoot, which as crazy as it sounds now, is not always the case with the current state of affairs. Some boring stuff below.
A little info on Thomas Hill—
During the Biden Admin, the EPA proposed new rules to go after “fossil fuel” plants and their GHG (Greenhouse gas) emissions. In 2024, they briefly became new rules, wherein coal plants/units planning to operate past Jan 1, 2039 were considered “long-term,” units planning to operate after Jan 1, 2032 but cease operation before Jan 1, 2039 were considered “medium term,” and all others planning to cease before Jan 1, 2032 were exempt. It called for the “long-term” units to install CCS (carbon capture and sequestration/storage) with a 90% capture rate by Jan 1, 2032 (this technology does not exist yet). “Medium term” was to co-fire 40% with natural gas by Jan 1, 2030. Thomas Hill is a part of a group of power plants in Missouri without a set retirement date (Sikeston, New Madrid, Iatan, Hawthorn) [Though Sikeston seems on a path to retire sooner rather than later], which means these new regulations would force them to take a position. They may either declare a retirement date before Jan 1, 2032 if they see no reason to pay for these upgrades, or declare a date beyond 2032 and prepare to begin the process of retrofitting.
In June of 2025, the EPA—now under a new Admin—proposed repealing all GHG emission standards for fossil fuel-fired power plants, which includes rules set under both the Obama and Biden Admins. There was a public hearing in July of 2025 on the subject and public comment was open until August 7th, 2025. They received 127,000 comments. The end is coming and it’s approaching fast. The next Admin will take office in January of 2029 and will most certainly make their own rules and changes wherever they are allowed to do so. In this context, Thomas Hill and its four Missouri counterparts not yet having retirement dates isn’t exactly promising news as any Admin change, court ruling, or rule change could force them to take a position at any time. There is no comforting way to swallow the fact 2030 is now knocking on the door and that everything eventually turns to shit. Sorry, I modified it.

A very cold dark dawn walking the dogs had me reasonably intrigued to continue my walk swopping the dogs for a camera just to see if I could drum up a photo. Frost, floods and ice surely makes it different enough to find something interesting, well not really. What a rat hole I live in, with the trees bare and the vegetation beaten back by the winter and heavy rain of late, all the litter is now in plain site. Honestly I think it is the worst I’ve ever see it, it would seem with covid forcing more people walking round locally, much more rubbish has been discarded. Rather than going to a pub many have decided to buy a carrier bag full of naff larger and drink that on their walk, discarding the empty can’s en route, not forgetting the snacks or takeaways on the way, they packets and cartons make a interesting addition to the local flora. Now I know why I walk the dogs in the dark, it’s not as depressing. Determined to get the camera out I step over the microwave, through the bushes, the bottles, cans and cartons to a flooded area frozen over, with the newly risen sun catching the ice. I blinker my vision to the restriction of the viewfinder, take a photo and head home. With this isolation give abstract beauty, without my words you need know no more. However I still see the decay beyond the frame, I think it will have to be deep snow and a heavy mist to temp me out with the camera again while lockdown continues.
