They're limes, for crying out loud!
And crying out loud is what you'll be doing when you plunk down the dough for these green beauties!
Welll.. the price is high, and Cuba has a whole bunch of 'em.
Lime Costs Squeeze Margarita Makers Before Cinco de Mayo
By Debarati Roy and Megan Durisin 2014-05-03T04:00:01Z
The most expensive ingredient in the margaritas at Adobo Grill in Chicago isn’t the tequila. It’s the lime.
Costs for the fruit more than tripled in the past two months, squeezing profit margins before the biggest U.S. margarita bash of the year, Cinco de Mayo, according to George Ortiz, who helped start Abodo 14 years ago in the historic Old Town neighborhood, the home of The Second City comedy club and about a mile north of the Miracle Mile shopping district.
“We fresh-squeeze lime juice every day,” said Ortiz, 50. “We use it for table-side guacamole, fresh squeezed limes right there. We use it for ceviches. It’s a huge expense.”
Lime prices are surging as some growers in Mexico, which supplies about 97 percent of the fruit in the U.S., banded together to set prices after a crop disease ravaged trees. Americans spend about $2.9 billion annually on margaritas, which account for about 14 percent of the country’s cocktail sales, according to Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based research firm tracking the food industry.
“Cinco De Mayo is by far considered the biggest day for margarita sales in the U.S.,” David Henkes, a vice president at Technomic, said April 23. “It will disproportionately impact higher-end restaurants and those that tend to make from-scratch margaritas. You may also see restaurants and bars promote other more profitable cocktails if lime prices stay high.”
Retail Prices
Retail-lime prices climbed to 56 cents per fruit as of April 4, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Market News unit. One lime yields about 1 ounce of juice. By comparison, a 750-milliliter bottle of Zapopan Reposado Tequila is listed at a regular cost of $12.99 at online beverage-retailer BevMo. That’s about 51 cents an ounce. Ortiz said he spends about $23 on a bottle, while the equivalent amount of lime juice costs him $40.
Prices for limes are up 81 percent from a year earlier and more than double the cost in mid-January, the USDA data show. The Standard & Poor’s GSCI gauge of 24 commodities gained 4.5 percent in the past 12 months while the MSCI All-Country World Index of equities rose 13 percent.
Members of Mexico’s Citrus Growers Association of Apatzingan Valley limited supply to guarantee a minimum price for producers, Leonardo Santibanez, an association member and coordinator of its trade events, said in March. The group has been able to push up prices after crop disease in the neighboring state of Colima crimped production, making Apatzingan the main grower. Excess rainfall also hampered output. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service does not track Mexico lime production separately from overall citrus output.
U.S. Celebration
The Cinco de Mayo holiday commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla and has become a celebration in the U.S. of Mexican food, culture and, of course, drinks.
Dos Caminos, which operates six restaurants, including four in New York, one in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and one in Atlantic City, New Jersey, uses as many as 40 cases of limes per week. After prices climbed to about $100 a case from about $35 at the beginning of the year, costs jumped by $10,000 a month, Jaclyn Schwartz, a New York-based marketing specialist at the chain which is owned by BR Guest Hospitality Group, said in an April 23 e-mail.
12,000 Margaritas
“We are hoping that enough people walk in through the door to help us make up for the squeeze in margins,” Elias Mandilaras, a 32-year-old manager at the Dos Caminos midtown Manhattan location, said April 23. Last year, the six restaurants served 12,000 margaritas during the weekend of Cinco De Mayo. Limes are also used in some food recipes and in guacamole.
The USDA estimates consumer fresh-fruit prices will increase 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent this year, the most of any food group, according to an April 25 report. Drought in California will mean rising costs for produce from lettuce to tomatoes, according to Arizona State University in Tempe. Dry weather in Brazil spurred an 84 percent surge for arabica coffee this year, while orange-juice futures gained 15 percent.
Limes may not impact all U.S. bars celebrating Cinco de Mayo because only about 30 percent of the margaritas served nationwide are made “from scratch,” using fresh citrus juice, Henkes of Technomic said. Most of the drinks are made with a “ready-to-use” mix, he said in an e-mail. Most mixes don’t contain fruit juice.
Mexico Prices
In Mexico, lime costs dropped 25 percent in early April after soaring 41 percent in March and 68 percent in February, according to government data. The country’s consumer protection agency filed a complaint with the attorney general’s office last month against growers in Michoacan state for allegedly fixing prices and driving up inflation, Lorena Martinez, who heads the agency, said in an April 4 interview.
The price of the fruit doubled in the first four months of 2013 before the government sent troops to western Mexico to ensure the safety of farmers who were being extorted by drug cartels. In May that year, prices fell the most since 2011.
For Ortiz at Adobo Grill, expenses have stayed high, rising to about $120 a box now, from $30 in February, he said April 24. The bar uses 20 boxes a week, with each containing about 110 limes, or enough to make 2,000 margaritas. About 80 percent of the drinks served are garnished with lime.
Mark Malbone, a manager at Chavela’s in Brooklyn, said the restaurant decided this week to start garnishing drinks with lemon wedges instead of limes. Last year, the restaurant served 400 margaritas during Cinco de Mayo weekend, and they will continue to make the drinks with fresh lime juice, Malbone said April 30.
“Limes have become a cause of big concern, and we are losing 5 percent of our earnings because of higher prices,” said Malbone, who has been in the restaurant industry for 20 years. “We are hoping enough people flock in this weekend, and that the days of exorbitant lime prices end very soon.”

"Show-rooming" is what killed many retailers, that's when people go to a store and see the product in real life, then go home and order it for cheap either in Amazon, eBay, etc.
Gariotin I brought back from SF (4oz, $11.99, from Whole Foods). You can't find interesting cheeses like these in Taipei. This might have been a little over-ripe as I left it sitting in my fridge for 2+ weeks, but it was still good.
The wine is an el-cheapo $6.99 California pinot (2005 Irony) I picked up from BevMo on sale. Wine similar to this will go for probably around $30 here in Taipei.
In Tijuana, Mexico's Zona Norte, if you order "A beer for the Lady and me", what she'll get is a bottle the size of the left "Coronita" bottle, while your bottle will be the size of the right "Corona Light" bottle. There will also be a price discrepancy: the "Lady Drink" will cost about 170-250% of your drink's price! (some of that profit is "kicked back" to the lady, though...) Taken at the Emeryville, CA BevMo store by a Minolta CLE with a Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm ƒ 1.4 lens on Fujichrome Velvia 50 film.
I don't know the exact metric volume, the approximate volume in Fluid Ounces is 7 for the "lady drink" and 12 for the male drink... The price difference in Tijuana, the last time I checked, was $7 us for the lady drink and $ 3 us for the male size. (Since I now have a Tijuana-based fianceé, I haven't been in a TJ bar for about a year...)
Something to watch out for in the Zona Norte TJ bars, there's ladies(?) (Called ficheras in Mexican Spanish...) who will just talk to you (they won't head upstairs to the "Hrrrooom" – ever!…) and drink these "Lady drinks" - the mixed drinks are even worse, the drink usually doesn't have any alcohol in it! (If you watch the bartender closely, he'll [they're all male, as far as I've seen...] reach for a different bottle [with colored water in it...] for the tequila/rum/gin/vodka/whatever in the drink for the lady than the one he uses for the guys...)
Liquor stores are always an easy target. There is a Mission Liquor store not far from where I live, but neither the doors nor the windows are boarded up. I guess the thinking is that if any mayhem were to happen it would happen in downtown Glendale. So BevMo! is closed up until further notice.

This is the old east side entrance to Friendly Hills Lanes that sadly went out of business. So glad they decided to repurpose the Googie-style building and sign.

“His battle with General Zod took a great toll on Superman. He lost his love, Lois Lane, and saw what it would take to truly keep the world safe. After meeting several like-minded super powered beings, he formed the Justice Lords to help survey the Earth and keep it clear of any and all criminal activity. He took off Jor-El’s red and blue uniform, and instead donned one that’s black and white, to match his new view on justice. There are no gray areas with this new Justice Lord Superman.”
I really love the new suit in the upcoming Man of Steel movie, so I got it in my head that it would be cool to try out different design concepts. One of the most popular, and one that I too happen to love, is the Justice Lords costume from the episode “A Better World” from the Justice League cartoon. Since the costume is all black, I used the arms and lower body from the Movie Masters General Zod figure, and the torso, head, and cape from Superman. I repainted the torso flat black, and detailed all the piping on the suit with gloss black to help it stand out. I used thin styrene rods to form a collar around the neck, and for piping on either side of his chest shield to help it line up with the cape. Everything on the suit was painted to match the Justice Lords costume design and mesh it with the Man of Steel suit design. I even repainted his hands and head to make them look more realistic, and make his face look angrier.
I also made an alternate “heat vision blast” head. I drilled through the eyes for sockets, and painted red around them for a heat vision effect. I used Bevmo martini picks for the heat vision blasts, and made two different sets: one long, one short. I used hot glue on the longer set to make it look more like wild, uncontained heat, as if he was just setting the air on fire. The shorter set was made to look more subdued, and has smoke coming off of the ends. I really made this to recreate the scene from that episode of Justice League where Justice Lords Superman lobotomizes Doomsday, but of course it can be used for any number of displays. And then I repainted the stand the Movie Masters Superman figure comes with to match the red and white design of the Justice Lords costume. So now Justice Lords Superman is ready to keep the Earth safe, by any means necessary!

I’m very excited about the upcoming Man of Steel movie, and love the costume design. Stll, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would look like a little more classically inspired. So I took the newly released Man of Steel Movie Masters Superman figure and gave him a full repaint that’s inspired by his classic look. I made the reds and blues much more vibrant, and even gave him back his trunks! It has an intricate paint job with lots of washes and dry brushes of various pigments to help really bring out every detail in the suit. I made sure, for the yellow in his emblem and belt, to use two different gold hues to bring out a vibrant metallic look. I also sculpted a little spit curl coming down from his hair, to really drive home the classic Superman vibe I was going for. I also made it so Superman can actually look up now! The standard figure was a dog, in that it couldn’t look up at all, but with a little modification he can now look up to the skies, and looks good in a flying pose.
But I couldn’t just stop there! I also wanted to make some Superman related accessories. I made a few kryptonite rocks for a display, and even made him a kryptonite necklace, inspired by the one Christopher Reeve wore in the climax of Superman the Movie. I know that the kryptonite necklace is pretty specific to that film, but I dig it so much I couldn’t help but throw one in for this Man of Steel custom. I also made some heat vision blast attachments! I took some Bevmo Martini picks, and clipped off the ends and shaved down the bulbous parts, made some small starbursts out of hot glue on some clear vinyl, and stuck the ends of the picks into them until they cooled down, and painted them clear red. Since I didn’t have a second head to work from, these have to be attached with poster tack, but it works really well and looks so cool!
Now, not only does the Man of Steel have a classic looking costume, he’s fully ready to take on any villain in his way!

The Absinthe cabinet at the Emeryville, CA BevMo store. This distilled beverage was banned for almost a century on a (yes, one!) faulty, so-called "scientific", study suggesting that this item was more addictive, and more deadly, than regular alcoholic beverages of the same alcoholic content. Yes, some of the 1880-1910 Absinthe (the "high noon" of the beverage) was deadly, but it wasn't the beverage itself - it was cheap brands that were adulterated with deadly chemicals! (Goes to show that you should wait for confirming studies [by neutral scientists, not "scientists" with an "axe to grind"] before banning a substance, something the Federal Government should remember RE: marijuana [see rant, below]...) This shot taken by a Minolta CLE with a Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm ƒ 1.4 lens on Fujichrome Velvia 50 film. Exposure is on the order of 1/30 sec @ ƒ 1.4…
The price cards in front of the cabinet show the small Depth of Field that even a 40mm lens has at ƒ 1.4... (lens was focused on the split between the two sliding glass panels...)
{RANT}
I find it interesting that, in every study done by, or funded by, the Federal Government on Marijuana, something is found "dangerous": while in most studies done funded outside the Feds, there is no such finding...(I bet the Feds and those they fund are still using marijuana laced with Paraquat!)

My son and his buddy are now 21. They bought 5 of these little bottles at Beverages and More (Bevmo). My wife quickly hid them away to keep them from my 18 and 14 year olds. We rarely have any alcohol in the house. Both our families have a history of alcoholism.
We found the 2 absinthes we were looking for at BevMo liquor store. They had a St. George and one last Mansinthe. It was really really hard waiting to get home to Canada to open them.

E-waste is a popular, informal name for electronic products nearing the end of their "useful life." Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, and fax machines are common electronic products. Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled.
With the passage of the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 , certain portions of the electronic waste stream are defined and the systems to recover and recycle them will be administratively regulated beyond the universal waste rules that apply to material handling. Please review CalRecycle's efforts to implement the Act for more information.
Photos taken on August 16, 2009. This corner, Centinela and Venice Blvd. in West Los Angeles, California used to be the site of a singe SAFEWAY Supermarket. That supermarket was closed in the 1960s and demolished. SAFEWAY Supermarkets rebuilt on the site, turning the property into a shopping center. This shopping center opened around 1972. When the older SAFEWAY closed, the property sat vacant for a few years. The new SAFEWAY Shopping Center contained a SAFEWAY Supermarket and a Sav-on Drug Store. The old SAFEWAY, which I don't remember very well, nor do I have a photograph of it, as far as I can remember, looked close to the former SAFEWAY in Westchester on La Tijera that is now a Pep Boys Auto Supply Store.
The view here is along Centinela of Mitsuwa Marketplace (former SAFEWAY Supermarket), which is to the left of the CVS Pharmacy Drug Store. The CVS is a former Savon Drugs, converted to CVS Pharmacy in 2006. It was part of the take over of CVS on all the freestanding Sav-on and Osco Drug Stores from Albertsons Supermarkets. Albertsons kept all their in house Sav-on and Osco Drug Store Pharmacies. This former Sav-on was also renamed OSCO Drugs in the 1980s, however it did not last a long time, as the parent company renamed all the West Coast (and a few other regions) back to Sav-On Drug Stores. It was a Sav-On Drug Store at the time of its conversion to CVS Pharmacy.
Next to CVS, on its left is the former SAFEWAY Supermarket. SAFEWAY operated at this site from around 1972 to 1984 when it converted the former SAFEWAY to a Liquor Barn Store. The conversion to Liquor Barn was the result of SAFEWAY acquiring several Thrifitmart Supermarkets. Thriftimart had a location about a mile south at Washington Place and Centinela. SAFEWAY remodeled the Thriftimart Supermarket and closed down this store. Almost immediately after SAFEWAY closed this location, it stripped the old SAFEWAY of all its refridgeration units and converted it into a LIquor Barn. This was a giant liquor store that had a large selection of liquor (same concept as Bev More--started by the same former SAFEWAY Executives), sodas and crackers/chips. SAFEWAY operated this LIquor Barn for a few years, until they divested the chain, which subsequently closed down. After LIquor Barn closed down, the store sat vacant for awhile, then reopened as an independent Asian Grocer. The old SAFEWAY was converted into an independent market/cafe/shops, which includes a small market, cafe and a book store. It almost appears that each section is owned by a separate vendor, or owner. The bookstore has it own glassed off section. The owners of this store had a couple of others in the area, including Downtown Los Angeles in LIttle Tokoyo. A few years ago another company, Mitsuwa Marketplace took over the store. It is basically unchanged in its format. There is also a Mitsuwa Marketplace in Torrance as well as some locations in Northern California.
From Mitsuwa's Website:
Located at the corner of Venice Blvd. & Centinela Ave., Mitsuwa Marketplace, Santa Monica store provides one-stop shopping of Japanese groceries and products. The specialty shops inside this unique store offers Books, Cafe, Household Items, Video Rental, and more. Our Restaurant Row is the place to enjoy your lunch or dinner with many authentic choices; Ramen, Udon, Donburi dishes, and more. Our recent addition to the store is "Books & Cafe", providing a serene and comfortable space with Japanese books and robust brew of premium blue mountain coffee.
hitachino nest white ale from kiuchi brewery in Japan. discovered this stuff at the alibi room (which happens to be the brick-n-mortar home of the very popular kogi bbq - good stuff - they started the new food truck craze in la.. just last night i saw the philly cheese steak truck.. im gunna hafta try that soon). its a really good, really expensive belgium white ale style or wheat beer. found it at BevMo for $5. and thats for a single 11.2 ounce bottle. shot for strobist sundays theme favorite food - it is after all made with wheat! that counts don't it?
besides beer, whats my favorite food? i can't choose. i can only narrow it down. burgers, pizza, burritos, ice cream, and filet mignon.

This might look exactly like a SS shot I took several years ago, but I'm reshooting for this beverage/tequila company I do freelance (photo) work for. Their stuff's actually really good and have been racking up awards left and right since the last time I posted, so give it a shot (literally) the next time you're in a BevMo!

Day 214:
Today Sheri and I went out to Tom’s Farms in Corona. Our co-worker/friend Jen and
her two kids have never been before. So we figured it was something fun to go do and
the weather has been so nice the past few days. We got up early this morning and it was cold and grey outside. Very different than the warm sunny days we’ve been having.
We figured it would burn off (clear up) so we kept to our plans. That never happened. It even rained for a bit while traveling up the 57 on our way to the 60. Never take the 91.
(Those would be freeways for those who might be wondering what I was talking about.)
It was pretty cold out there, but we still had a good time. Sheri and I got something to eat at Tom’s Burgers before meeting up with Jen and the kids. We started off at the carousel, the moved on to the train, played with the nannie goats and the billie goats.
They are so cute when they are little.
Next it was to candy shop. I got some chocolate and vanilla flavored gummies, sugar-free dark chocolate peanut butter cups and... oh some Good and Plenties :)
It was getting colder so we started to wind things down, but before we did, we caught a quick magic show by Anthony the Magic!. Once that was over, we decided to leave We then headed to Ikea, Bevmo, home now and our Thai food just arrived. Time to eat some dinner.
The rooster? Oh they have quite a large one at Tom’s Farm. We’ve taken photos with
it before on past trips and one of the braver gummies wanted his photo with it.
Update: I just realized I saw two types of Billies today.
Goat and Ikea furniture model.
Saw this at the BevMo the other day and bought it on the strength of the label alone.
To me it looks like a Chinese take on Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. How could I not try it?
Plus it is pear cider. It was tasty and a little bit bubbly. Perfect for summer.
But the clincher was their slogan at the top of the label:
"The Happiest Drink In The World"
