Former Diablo Foods located at 155 Diablo Rd. in Danville,CA. The Diablo Foods chain had four stores at its peak, however only one located in Lafayette,CA remains open. This store became a Payless Drug Store and for less than a year a Rite Aid. It sat vacant for a little which than became a Beverages and More (BevMo). BevMo is still open to this date.

One that I dug out of the archives...
Here in the US we've got several chain stores that cater to those who imbibe. I'm talking stores like BevMo and Total Wine and More whose shelves are stocked floor to ceiling with pretty much any adult beverage you might be looking for.
Things might be different today but in 2019 you certainly wouldn't have been able to find this little delight! Cristal is exclusively made, bottled, and sold in Cuba and definitely not exported, except to maybe Russia or North Korea, definitely not the US.
We were on a cruise that included a stop in Cienfuegos Cuba during that small window when Americans could go and visit. As part of our tour we were treated to an extravagant luncheon which included the Mayor and other dignitaries of Trinidad de Cuba, along with a sampling of Cuban beer. It was pure propaganda, meant to show the capitalists that Cuba was doing just fine all by themselves and didn't need help from anyone but please just ignore the everyday Cuban peasants out on the street.
They put on good show, I'll give them that but no matter how pretty and shiny the outside trappings were the truth was very visible.
Today starts something new. Inspired by an earlier post of a day shot of this fabulous Encino classic, it occured to me that there is much more to this community. So for the next week or so, I'll show you around town!
I won't bore you with essays or anything like that. There's always Wikipedia for more info. It's really just local observations or current trends that I hope you enjoy the pictures of.
Encino is part of City of Los Angeles, it's not it's own city. There's no 'Downtown Encino', rather there is Ventura Blvd. Or just 'The Blvd'. There are 2 Zip Codes: 91436 and 91316.
Interestingly enough, I shot this from the BevMo! across the street. Also, I posted my first ever video to Flickr of the sign in animation. It's only 7 seconds and be sure to turn the sound up! I love the flourescent glow in this, too.
I hope to do more of these Lifestyle Series featuring other communities, maybe one a month. :-)))

It really glows in Lightbox

I was at the local BevMo stocking up on Prosecco for New Years and ran across this. It was the last sixpack left on the shelf. I figured that was a good sign so I bought it. Gotta say I was not disappointed. 👍👍
Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed the frosty glasses of hard apple cider in Australia - fresh, fruity, sparkly and light - just the thing to revive you on a warm day; I bought a local brand at BevMo and it just wasn't the same....
There's "essential" and then there's "ESSENTIAL!"
It's five o'clock somewhere.

Funky Red Barn looking Chipotle restaurant in Menifee, California's Countryside Marketplace, a large shopping promenade featuring Super Target, Kohls, Best Buy, Justice, Lane Bryant and other shops, in the future they will add Aldi and a new Krispy Kreme.
Other shops I couldn't get photos of due to time restrains are Lowe's Home Improvement, BevMo!, Staples, etc.
Wines from all over the world. How glamorous!
Well, mostly Bevmo actually, but why crush my dreams?

Sports Authority at Murrieta's Village Walk Plaza, this store opened 2008 alongside Bed, Bath and Beyond, Office Depot, Circuit City, Famous Footwear, BevMo! And Levitz furniture, now Levitz is Jerome's furniture, Party City remains closed as does Circuit City, now Sports Authority is on the verge of liquidation...
Sadly at this point, the store manager approached me and asked me why (he was actually friendly, not angry but curious) I was taking photos, I told him I was just taking some to archive since the store was going to close; he said "oh were not closing", I told him that I saw only that the store was going to liquidate and that I read that online (in the news) but he said "oh, don't believe the news", at this point I decided to leave (didn't buy anything) but I guess he's just being delusional, Sports Authority already decided to liquidate their remaining stores so yeah Eric, you're just rearranging deck chairs on the Costa Concordia...

And so that's the end of this small photo tour (cut short), I am not sure if I want to come back once the chain starts liquidating or not, seriously people it's 2016, everyone has cameras in their phones, everyone takes pictures, get over it, sadly though this store will be empty by year's end it seems so Murrieta (and Temecula!) will lose another retailer; Dick's Sporting Goods and Big 5 Sports already have locations in Murrieta and Temecula has Big 5 already so it will be hard to see who will be taking this space.
So glad they decided to repurpose the Googie-style building and sign of the former Friendly Hills Lanes

Kayaks on sale, kind of expensive though!
www.bevmo.com has a sale in all alcohol drinks. :D
I spotted this wine rack in a restaurant I was eating last weekend.
I've been busy catching up with the tv series, "The Wire", and "The Shield". :)
Note:
- I took this with an iPhone 4.
-I applied a photoshop action called Soulful Inspire, Soothe.
Who doesn't love a Bevmo 5 cent wine sale? Buy one get one for 5 cents! This is the perfect opertunity to buy some of those wines that cost a little extra, that you'd feel too guilty buying if you only got one, because let's face it. The $3.00 jug of Chardonnay will do the trick, but it's always nice to try new things from different places of the world.
What's your favorite wine?
My Christmas decorations include these festive and fun wine bottle corks - Not sure whether I'm Vixen or Blitzen :)
I earned a glass or two of wine today; first stop Costco, then Macy's Men's Store, then Pottery Barn, then Melt (for a quick lunch), then Macy's, then AOS, then Williams Sonoma, then the library, then BevMo, then Safeway, then the gas station, then home.... I might have left off 1 or 2 other stops :)

Formerly Sports Chalet, this store has been finally retenanted! Total Wine and More, a store similar to BevMo! will open in half the store and the other half will become Designer Shoe Warehouse or DSW, this paired with Nordstrom's Rack, ULTA Beauty and the mall next door will sure lure lots of lady shoppers; call the girls and make it a fun afternoon out!

Shoes galore, although there's a Famous Footwear next door already so when the store closes it won't be much of an issue.
They're limes, for crying out loud!
And crying out loud is what you'll be doing when you plunk down the dough for these green beauties!
Welll.. the price is high, and Cuba has a whole bunch of 'em.
Lime Costs Squeeze Margarita Makers Before Cinco de Mayo
By Debarati Roy and Megan Durisin 2014-05-03T04:00:01Z
The most expensive ingredient in the margaritas at Adobo Grill in Chicago isn’t the tequila. It’s the lime.
Costs for the fruit more than tripled in the past two months, squeezing profit margins before the biggest U.S. margarita bash of the year, Cinco de Mayo, according to George Ortiz, who helped start Abodo 14 years ago in the historic Old Town neighborhood, the home of The Second City comedy club and about a mile north of the Miracle Mile shopping district.
“We fresh-squeeze lime juice every day,” said Ortiz, 50. “We use it for table-side guacamole, fresh squeezed limes right there. We use it for ceviches. It’s a huge expense.”
Lime prices are surging as some growers in Mexico, which supplies about 97 percent of the fruit in the U.S., banded together to set prices after a crop disease ravaged trees. Americans spend about $2.9 billion annually on margaritas, which account for about 14 percent of the country’s cocktail sales, according to Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based research firm tracking the food industry.
“Cinco De Mayo is by far considered the biggest day for margarita sales in the U.S.,” David Henkes, a vice president at Technomic, said April 23. “It will disproportionately impact higher-end restaurants and those that tend to make from-scratch margaritas. You may also see restaurants and bars promote other more profitable cocktails if lime prices stay high.”
Retail Prices
Retail-lime prices climbed to 56 cents per fruit as of April 4, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Market News unit. One lime yields about 1 ounce of juice. By comparison, a 750-milliliter bottle of Zapopan Reposado Tequila is listed at a regular cost of $12.99 at online beverage-retailer BevMo. That’s about 51 cents an ounce. Ortiz said he spends about $23 on a bottle, while the equivalent amount of lime juice costs him $40.
Prices for limes are up 81 percent from a year earlier and more than double the cost in mid-January, the USDA data show. The Standard & Poor’s GSCI gauge of 24 commodities gained 4.5 percent in the past 12 months while the MSCI All-Country World Index of equities rose 13 percent.
Members of Mexico’s Citrus Growers Association of Apatzingan Valley limited supply to guarantee a minimum price for producers, Leonardo Santibanez, an association member and coordinator of its trade events, said in March. The group has been able to push up prices after crop disease in the neighboring state of Colima crimped production, making Apatzingan the main grower. Excess rainfall also hampered output. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service does not track Mexico lime production separately from overall citrus output.
U.S. Celebration
The Cinco de Mayo holiday commemorates the Mexican victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla and has become a celebration in the U.S. of Mexican food, culture and, of course, drinks.
Dos Caminos, which operates six restaurants, including four in New York, one in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and one in Atlantic City, New Jersey, uses as many as 40 cases of limes per week. After prices climbed to about $100 a case from about $35 at the beginning of the year, costs jumped by $10,000 a month, Jaclyn Schwartz, a New York-based marketing specialist at the chain which is owned by BR Guest Hospitality Group, said in an April 23 e-mail.
12,000 Margaritas
“We are hoping that enough people walk in through the door to help us make up for the squeeze in margins,” Elias Mandilaras, a 32-year-old manager at the Dos Caminos midtown Manhattan location, said April 23. Last year, the six restaurants served 12,000 margaritas during the weekend of Cinco De Mayo. Limes are also used in some food recipes and in guacamole.
The USDA estimates consumer fresh-fruit prices will increase 3.5 percent to 4.5 percent this year, the most of any food group, according to an April 25 report. Drought in California will mean rising costs for produce from lettuce to tomatoes, according to Arizona State University in Tempe. Dry weather in Brazil spurred an 84 percent surge for arabica coffee this year, while orange-juice futures gained 15 percent.
Limes may not impact all U.S. bars celebrating Cinco de Mayo because only about 30 percent of the margaritas served nationwide are made “from scratch,” using fresh citrus juice, Henkes of Technomic said. Most of the drinks are made with a “ready-to-use” mix, he said in an e-mail. Most mixes don’t contain fruit juice.
Mexico Prices
In Mexico, lime costs dropped 25 percent in early April after soaring 41 percent in March and 68 percent in February, according to government data. The country’s consumer protection agency filed a complaint with the attorney general’s office last month against growers in Michoacan state for allegedly fixing prices and driving up inflation, Lorena Martinez, who heads the agency, said in an April 4 interview.
The price of the fruit doubled in the first four months of 2013 before the government sent troops to western Mexico to ensure the safety of farmers who were being extorted by drug cartels. In May that year, prices fell the most since 2011.
For Ortiz at Adobo Grill, expenses have stayed high, rising to about $120 a box now, from $30 in February, he said April 24. The bar uses 20 boxes a week, with each containing about 110 limes, or enough to make 2,000 margaritas. About 80 percent of the drinks served are garnished with lime.
Mark Malbone, a manager at Chavela’s in Brooklyn, said the restaurant decided this week to start garnishing drinks with lemon wedges instead of limes. Last year, the restaurant served 400 margaritas during Cinco de Mayo weekend, and they will continue to make the drinks with fresh lime juice, Malbone said April 30.
“Limes have become a cause of big concern, and we are losing 5 percent of our earnings because of higher prices,” said Malbone, who has been in the restaurant industry for 20 years. “We are hoping enough people flock in this weekend, and that the days of exorbitant lime prices end very soon.”

Gariotin I brought back from SF (4oz, $11.99, from Whole Foods). You can't find interesting cheeses like these in Taipei. This might have been a little over-ripe as I left it sitting in my fridge for 2+ weeks, but it was still good.
The wine is an el-cheapo $6.99 California pinot (2005 Irony) I picked up from BevMo on sale. Wine similar to this will go for probably around $30 here in Taipei.

"Show-rooming" is what killed many retailers, that's when people go to a store and see the product in real life, then go home and order it for cheap either in Amazon, eBay, etc.
