#1. It is not usually a species that is out in the open and prefers edge habitat that offers thick cover.

#2. The yellow lores of the White-throated are the result of pigments known as carotenoids which are acquired through its diet. Carotenoids are only found in plants and responsible for the red, orange, and yellow colouring in birds.

#3. The White-throated is a short-distance, nocturnal migrant. It winters mainly in the southeastern United States. There is evidence that Females winter further south than males.

• Unlike ducks, cormorants’ feathers are not very waterproof. While having water resistant feathers protects a bird’s body from getting soaked, this oily coating isn’t great for diving. Cormorants’ feathers instead get waterlogged, allowing the bird to sink and dive more efficiently. Their solid bodies and dense bones also contribute to their excellent diving skills.

• While pros at swimming, the cormorants’ waterlogged feathers often make it look as if they are struggling in water. They often have just their faces and necks above the water’s surface and, after a dip, perch in trees or sit on rocks with their wings open to dry their feathers in the sun.

• Double-crested cormorants can dive to depths of 25 feet, but some cormorant species can reportedly dive to an astounding depth of 150 feet, which makes them some of the deepest diving birds around.

Kinglets are tiny insectivores that actively forage for insect and spider eggs on the undersides of foliage. They weigh less than an ounce and are among the smallest of songbirds. Interesting Facts: The White-throated sparrow comes in two color forms: individuals with black and white stripes and those with brown and tan stripes. This polymorphism of the White-throated sparrow is due to genetic differences and is unique among birds. Moreover, individuals almost always mate with a bird who displays their opposite morph.

Bird ID : “Pied Bushchat”

Description:

A sedentary “chat” associated with open habitats in tropical and subtropical Asia. Males are black with a white vent and a white wing patch. Females are dark brown with a reddish-brown rump and underparts. Females can resemble the migratory Siberian Stonechat, but can be separated by the absence of an eyebrow and of any white on the collar or wing. Rather conspicuous; it may use and sing from any open perch unlike more discerning stonechats. Calls include a rising “whee” and hard, decisive “chruk.”(GOOGLE)
