Heber Valley Railroad GP9 No. 5926, wearing a fresh coat of Rio Grande inspired paint, pulls the Deer Creek Express through Soldier Hollow in Charleston, Utah on July 11, 2023. The Denver & Rio Grande Western built this route from Provo, completed in 1899. EMD GP9s painted just like this served on the "Provo Canyon Branch" until full abandonment in 1972.

If you cut this picture in two the left side is the USA and the right side is Canada...Two distinct countries and yet nature manage to blend in.

This is a shot I never uploaded from the salt flats shoot with the F40 from a few months ago. Since today is the last day of 2012, I figured I would upload my favorite photo of the year, and this is it. 2012 has been an absolutely phenomenal year and I've had many wonderful experiences. If 2013 is even half as good as this year was, it's going to be quiute a year. Here's to all of you for wishes for a safe, happy, and prosperous new year.

Please do not use/post elsewhere without my prior consent. Thank you.

Well, you might as well hear the whole story on this guy. I was yanking up spent poppy plants in my yard and lo and behold a perfect green Monarch pupa dropped to the ground. I was horrified. There was some hope though - a tiny threadlike piece was still attached to the pupa top. My old mind started working. I can tie it back onto a plant of my choice. With what? Kitchen twine was the only thing that came to my panicked mind. So first I tied it to the pupa thread, and then onto a milkweed stem. It looked really beautiful and healthy. In fact, by the next day the transformation started as the color pigments inside began to show. I knew it would eclose the next morning and I began to visualize how I would photograph the tiny spectacle. I checked the next day early, inspected for a chink in the pupa, and decided I had time for breakfast and filling the bird feeder. Duties done, I gathered my camera gear, and expected I would settle onto a low stool and watch the wondrous show. Here's the "worst of times" part 2. It was already out. I missed probably by 10 minutes since the wings were already straightened out. He (yup, another boy) was hot to trot too - gone within another hour or so. To quote another piece of literature: "All's well that ends well."

The group is here.

The original is here.

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies;

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

Thus mellowed to that tender light

Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face;

Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all below,

A heart whose love is innocent!

A pleasant if chilly 90 mins or so at Rabbit Bridge last Saturday yielded several nice shots from the excellent GCR gala. For a bit of fun, here are the best bits from 3 separate images combined into one - 73156 (originally on a passenger train); the van train (doubled up, originally behind 6695) and finally an exhaust courtesy No.68067.

Thank you so much for picking this picture for your group's cover photo!

“A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, big or small, young or old. He doesn't care if you're not smart, not popular, not a good joke-teller, not the best athlete, nor the best-looking person. To your dog, you are the greatest, the smartest, the nicest human being who was ever born. You are his friend and protector.”

Here is the Best of Niko

I guess this is a puppy version and I will make one when he gets older :D so i can see the difference and how much he has grown and progressed.

I am expecting more amazing photos from him

so I think a photo shortage is out of the question xD

The Mermaid Parade brought out the happiest, kindest, friendliest people NYC has.

The former splendor of the vault at 88.7 WNHU, University Of New Haven. It's been systematically dismantled, sold off, and pillaged and probably is a station management lounge with Ikea couches now.

With 8 days left in 2024 I will be posting my favorite photo from May. May’s photo also has a baseball connection as it was taken near Dyersville, Iowa which was the filming site of the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams. Canadian National’s L565 climbs out of Dyersville on the ex Chicago Central. The sun finally showed itself within 10 minutes of sunset to give me a couple shots in brilliant last light.
