Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.

Some photographers loose their freshness, spontanity and creativity after a few years in this very competitive business. To avoid that happening to me, I take some time to play every now and then.
This time my friend and fellow photographer Karla, showed me some tricks for working in a small studio and I took her outside for some strobist style shooting.

FRANCE - Paris Strobist Seminar
We left really early in the morning to go to the Strobist Seminar in Paris. We all made some crazy pics while having a pitstop. Ake has clearly seen the light, while Madelien only saw the photographer.

Due to very busy schedules on both sides I couldn't do this engagement session until 3 days prior to the actual wedding. The couple were dealing with some organisational stuff so the session was cut short to less than an hour of actual shooting while the daylight was fading very quickly.
We still managed to pull some shots off and more importantly: we had fun and got to know each other a bit better.
A Canon 580EX II was placed in the nearby bathroom and shot through the mat glass door to create a big soft lightsource.

Without the help of the fantastic models Dirk Hesse and Sylviane Alliet this day wouldn't have been possible!

FRANCE - Paris Strobist Seminar
Pieter drove Ake, Madelien en myself to the Strobist seminar in Paris. The ride home was a lot of fun and despite the fatigue we couldn't resist taking some pics. And that made us take a wrong exit.

As part of my workshop 'the Decisive Photographer', I did a one hour live shoot. I wanted to play it fair and didn't check the location or anything in advance. We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.
A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.
I had my lensbaby for a while but never really got to play with it.

After we finished the 'Running in 2020' pictures, we were joined by pro model Sylvianne. We improvised and had a lot of fun with Dirk and Sylvianne. This picture was shot outside. Dirk reminded me of Iggy Pop and I wanted to make some harsh Iggy-images of him.
LIGHTING INFO:
Vivitar 285HV with small silver umbrella placed above and slightly in front of Dirk. Not very flattering light, but I wanted a dramatic look.

My daughter Maya turnde 3 last friday. Ofcourse we had to celebrate that. Maya enjoyed all the presents, sweets and attention.
In the afternoon there was a grandparents party in Maya's school, that's why she lookes like a member of the special forces in a happy mood.

Now the new studio is getting pretty close to being finished (at least the top floor), I wanted to test out a bit what kind of picture I can take in the space. So I asked the wonderful model Ine to pose for a couple of hours. Everything was lit with flash, no available light.

I love shooting families who can let themselves go, people who like to play, don't mind to get dirty and have fun. This family was so good at enoying themselves that it felt like I just had to press the shutter.

Just a few pictures from our family holiday. Travelling with 3 small kids can be pretty exhausting so I packed just a minimum of photo gear: my Ixus and a DSLR with one lens (which stayed in the hotel safe for most of the time anyway).
