I had the honor to document the baptism and welcoming party of Tigist, a cute, fun, small girl from Ethiopia that was welcomed in her new amazing family.

After a busy week with two workshops it was time for a break. Kobe and Maya are always up for some adventure. Noa stayed with her grandparents while we went for a canoe trip on 'the kleine nete'. Good weather and great fun.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys
Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.
We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.

At photokina I only took one picture and my friends didn't do much better. On our way home from Photokina we were all so tired that we started taking pics anyway to stay awake.

Just a family picture of my lovely wife and daughter Noa.
I love the way the 1DmkIII with the 50mm f/1.4 can still produce nice pictures in low light.

BELGIUM - Sint-Katelijne Waver
Noa turned 10 days, we've been married for 7 years and the family (on my mother's side) got together for a party. What I really liked is that so many members of the family got together. It's been several years since I saw some of them.

I used to spent many weeks every year camping and mountainbiking with my nephew Jef. Together we also took our first steps in photography with a couple of second hand Praktika's.
Strobist info: two strobes –right and left, and very close to the face–, 1/4 power, shoot through two DIY strip litghts. Here you'll find how to build it.
2007 may 5, Zaventem (Belgium), School party
Every year this school (Zavo) organises a big party/show starring all the kids and teachers and staff. This year the theme was 'the wrong party', meaning that they used music, costumes etc. that you should like if you want to be in fashion.

A few years ago I made a video of Ann's 18th birthday party. Ann and her parents went throught some really though times during the last years. To celebrate that everything is going well again they threw another party. Ann and her friens might be handicapped but boy do they know how to party.
I photographed this party to thank those great kids and their supporting families for one of the best parties I've ever been to.
No well paid commercial job or drop dead gorgeous model shoot can compeed with this. This is what really counts.

Valencia - SPAIN
I went to the first congres of the European Federation of Professional Photographers (FEP) in Spain. My camerabag was stolen on the last day so I lost a lot of money and all my images. Luckily I got to use a friends IXUS to make at least some images.

I love shooting families who can let themselves go, people who like to play, don't mind to get dirty and have fun. This family was so good at enoying themselves that it felt like I just had to press the shutter.

I doesn't happen very often but sometimes it feels like you know someone pretty well without ever meeting each other. Veerle is Belgian but lives with her husband and their adorable daughter in California. I've been reading her blog about their American adventures for ages and Veerle was one of the first readers of my blog.
On their recent visit to our country I finally had the pleasure to meet Veerle, Sven and Nina for a photo session and a nice chat. I really hope I can visit them in the US one day.

When shooting babies, it's often best to keep the lighting simple. We used a single Vivitar 285HV in a lastolite softbox to camera left.

Alpendorf, Sankt-Johan im Pongau, AUSTRIA
Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.
Noa and me. Another advantage of the compact camera is that I'm actually in a few shots ;-)

Some photographers loose their freshness, spontanity and creativity after a few years in this very competitive business. To avoid that happening to me, I take some time to play every now and then.
This time my friend and fellow photographer Karla, showed me some tricks for working in a small studio and I took her outside for some strobist style shooting.

As part of my workshop 'the Decisive Photographer', I did a one hour live shoot. I wanted to play it fair and didn't check the location or anything in advance. We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.
All natural light. The window in the back frames the subject and throws a nice reflection on the wooden floor. The shadow of the subject becomes leading line in the picture.
