Well what an incredible sunrise me and my three clients experienced this morning on my one day autumnal Lake District workshop at Windermere.

We were driving en-route to Rydal to shoot the tree when the colours in my minibus wing mirrors lit up with stunning pinks and blues. Without hesitation I decided to park up at Waterhead and walk down towards Holme Crag. It was an inspired choice due to the copious amounts of beautiful little boats that made for great subjects. Here's one such boat that enjoyed being surrounded by the mist that rolled on the surface of the water.

HUGE thanks to Carl, Dave and Dean for their company today. It was a really enjoyable day's photography and a quick hi to Chris Sale, a YouTube vlogger who I bumped into on the shoreline of Rydal mid-morning. It was great to chat with you Chris.

You can follow Chris's YouTube channel here and don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to his channel if you like what you see. www.youtube.com/channel/UCaR849-KG86v4UgD52PLT4g

Okay, that's it for today. I will edit another image tomorrow from today's workshop and I shall make a start on my New Zealand blog including plenty of my 'yet to be seen' images. If you would like to be notified of my New Zealand blog ahead of my social media followers, please SUBSCRIBE to my newsletter by clicking on this link. Go on, it only takes thirty seconds and the best bit is that IT'S FREE.

That Tree, which is what it is officially called (great name isn't it?), is perhaps one of New Zealand's most popular photographed views in the whole country. I would rank it in the top three most popular locations shot.

I can see why.

The tree is positioned on the edge of Lake Wanaka and only a two minute walk from the free car park. This location can also get quite busy, naturally so best to arrive early if you are wanting to photograph it at dawn. However on this particular occasion I arrived a couple of hours before dusk only to find some wonderful misty conditions which in part helped to obscure the mountains behind allowing for the tree to become so much more visible and enjoy its own time in the limelight.

I’ve seen a lot of mountain lakes during my travels, but this one is pretty spectacular! It has become a popular Instagram photography spot.

You can hike around the lake taking in different views of the mountains above, or rent a row-boat and float on the surface of its deep blue-green water.

At the closure of the Tilburg zoo in 1973 (competition became too big), when the animals were moved, a box with these chipmunks fell on the ground, which then burst open. It was not possible to catch them, so more than 45 years later Siberian chipmunks can still be found in the wild in Tilburg.

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Yesterday, I finally managed to capture Jamink Church in heavy mist. I have been waiting six weeks to get an opportunity to experience this amazing location in these conditions and late yesterday afternoon, just by chance as I was passing en-route home from another location, the conditions were absolutely perfect.

Rolling heavy mist, a gorgeous subtle orange sunset, and a church on the end of a high ridge. It really does not get any better than that for me. I was in raptures and so excited to see what I had captured on the memory card. Isn't that just the best feeling? Knowing that you should have gold on your card and not being able to wait until you return home to see exactly what you have got. It really felt like Christmas morning and Santa definitely delivered, lol.

So here is the image of Jamnik Church surrounded by rolling mist with huge mountains providing the dramatic backdrop.

I do LOVE sLOVEnia 😊

This view has taken 2 years to get with these conditions.... I was up at 01.30 and left home at 2 and drove for 5 hours going from north Somerset to Nottingham to pick up a mate and then onto Chrome Hill for sunrise.... And it paid off....

What a cracking location Inspired by Tim Dove photos from here . I headed this way to see for my self .Its a bout a 30 min walk to reach the main waterfalls and this stunning back drop called Greenhow End .

Photoshop blending of long and short exposure versions to eliminate movement of trees.

The Tide was actually on the way out and I kept shooting as the beach uncovered and exposed these lovely rocks...

I decided very late on that Saturday evening back at the end of October 2015 that I would venture up to the Lake District before dawn on a solo mission to capture the autumnal colours of the trees around Ullswater. I arrived just as daybreak was occurring.

I looked at it and thought that it would make a lovely subject to photograph. So I set up the camera and waited a few minutes before the sun made a fleeting appearance between the fog and clouds. The grasses on the right just lit up like a Christmas tree and I stood there and admired the view. On seeing the image on the back of my camera LCD, I knew I had something rather beautiful. I just love mornings like these and I can almost smell autumn in the air despite it being mid-August.

I hope you all like it.

WOW!!!

This view from where I stood back in February during my week away in the magical winter wonderland that is Lofoten in Norway will live on in my memory for some time to come.

I was stood by the water's edge looking down into the green icy water below that was so clear that I could see every last rock on the ocean floor some thirty to fifty feet down. It was quite incredible. Then the sun slowly set and over a period of around half an hour, the sky turned a gorgeous golden colour while small pieces of ice glided by below me.

This is a panorama put together from eleven vertical images and stitched together in Photoshop CC.

Lofoten in the winter is quite an amazing sight and I feel privileged to have experienced it. I cannot wait to return February 2020 to run another workshop.

I am delighted to announce that my 'Lichen On Coastal Cliffs, Butt Of Lewis, Isle Of Lewis' image has been 'Commended' in this year’s Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year competition and will be included in the hardback book and exhibition.

HUGE congratulations to the competition winner Dylan Nardini, all the category winners (including my good friend Tony Higginson who won the Seascape category) and all those that received commendations.

I wrote a short blog explaining how I shot the image along with some helpful links to view the competition images that were successful.

This image was captured this morning from Friar's Crag at Derwentwater while leading a 1-2-1 tuition day with David. It was just amazing to see the mist rolling along the surface of the water as the sun rose and illuminated the trees of Lord's Island just beautifully.

Autumn is definitely coming as the morning was a crisp 5°c. I cannot wait for the colours to change.

JOIN ME on my Five Day Northern Lights Iceland Workshop

15th - 20th October 2020

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product-category/iceland...

This location happens to be my favourite in Iceland (of the places I have visited anyway). The mighty Vestrahorn stands almost 1500ft high and towers over all that surrounds it. This huge section of gabbo rock dates back between eight and eleven million years and the site was used by the first settlers (Irish) before they were enslaved by Viking invaders (c.860). (www.icelandaurora.com)

These days however, whenever I approach the toll road (£8 per person paid to the cafe at the start of the road) and I look down towards the radar station and Vestrahorn on my left, a sense of excitement washes over me because I know that magic awaits me and has done so every time I have visited this location. Take your time to walk around and try to not walk into any future compositions for footprints in the soft black volcanic sand will ruin many a good shot.
