A bend in the River Taw as it meanders near its source on Dartmoor with the lower slopes of Cosdon Hill rising above the valley on other side.
Pictured above is a beautiful, medium sized hummingbird which is common in many areas of Costa Rica. Of course, 'medium' in the hummingbird world is still pretty small. As per Wikipedia: "The rufous-tailed hummingbird is 9 to 11 cm (3.5 to 4.3 in) long and weighs approximately 5 g (0.18 oz)." Males and females look alike. They don't behave the same though. The females do all the work to raise their progeny - nest building, egg incubation, and all aspects of rearing the nestlings.
As I mentioned in a previous post, these little birds are pretty spunky and will aggressively chase insects and other hummers from the territory it has staked out. There is at least one species of small hummingbird that almost tolerates humans because they can help keep the rufous-tailed at bay while they continue feeding. I had mixed luck, at best, trying to apply that theory.
The individual shown here is perched on one of its favourite branches, stretching a bit before heading out for some verbena nectar.
Bend in the Vrbas canyon next to the road
Stitched together from multiple images using Hugin panorama
Maybe photographed and posted here thousands of times. But I'm glad I was able to see and photograph it in person.
If you Googled "horseshoe bend" and found this shot, I'm guessing this wasn't the image you were expecting.

A pretty extreme example of note bending; my Classical Guitar, Suzy, warped to the max.
More abstract guitars in my album, "Wood and Steel."
An iconic landmarks in Arizona is Horseshoe Bend where the Colorado River travels almost completely around a promontory. The river cut through uplifted layers of sandstone to form a canyon 1,000 feet deep.
Happy Saturated Saturday!
Horseshoe bend Arizona was on my list of places to see on my southwest road trip. Oddly enough there is no fence or barrier around the bend. Bugs and photographers crowd the edges at sunset and sunrise.
Walking below the Civetta Wall in the Dolomites, I wondered why all the trees left standing on the steep slope had a downhill bend. I thought avalanches and snowpack could be contributing factors. The answer I found in an article by Simone Van Velzen, an alpine naturalist: "Bend or Break- Wintry Challenges for Trees in the Alps". On steep slopes, snow slides down very slowly – invisible to us – causing young trees to bend (or break). As soon as the snow melts, the trees grow perpendicularly upwards again, but a tree only grows at its top, this leaves the lower part bent.
Enz River Bend in morning mist. The lights on the right are the small town 'Mühlhausen an der Enz' located near the wetlands of Roßwag and Burghalde.

The Horseshoe Bend Canyon near Page, Arizona is an iconic landmark of the Colorado River system. We had trouble finding a good vantage point to take our shots. We finally settled on lying on the ground at the lip of the outer canyon wall and taking 4 pano images in the "portrait" camera position. The shots were then put together in Photoshop.
