It's now a year since the first injection to switch my ovaries off, and I've now just about got to grips with life without them...which means I'm ready for them to go permanently in two days time.
The final two additions required for managing the rest of my life without them were put into place in the last two weeks - hormone patches and a completely new diet for insulin resistance (along the lines of diabetic). Having a new ovary stuck on the outside is kind of novel!
Physiotherapists in my life so far:
1. A guy called Jason, for my back and legs when I was 19
2. A physio who hooked me up for traction sessions when I was 20, for back pain
3. An ex-olympic physio (also qualified surgeon) when I was 21, for back and legs
4. A female general physio primarily for feet, but also leg, back and shoulders 2005
5. A specialist hip physio, also a triathlete, for left hip, then right hip, after surgery 2007
6. A guy called Tom, also ex-pro waterskier, legs and whole body 2008
7 & 8. Two physios in London, pain management course 2009
9. Most recently, a random physio for a shoulder problem 2011
Although I did accomplish my goal to brush my teeth in the bathroom, it didn't end so well. Halfway through, the vignette-like tunnel vision started closing in and I felt incredibly wobbly - time to finish! Then everything went dimmer and my ears went like cotton-wool, then the silvery bits appear across my vision. This has happened to me enough times that I know this gives me just enough time to lie down before everything whites-out and I fall down. The gadgetry showed my blood pressure had plummeted, so they lay me down flat and hooked me up to oxygen. The miniscule walk was rescheduled for the following day.
On Thursday we went to the new season screening of the BBC 3 show Being Human at the Cuzon in Mayfair (London). It was a great night and the new season looks like it is off to a great start!
Just before the showing the cast got up on stage to say thanks and get shouted comments at them by fangirls ;)
I did nothing but lose the obnoxious BBC Three pink snake from the promo photo, and add a more sedate logo at the bottom. What a beautiful photo.

(Postscript: I would *lurve* to see our heroes encounter the Barry Island Gavin & Stacey Irregulars!)
Jett was letting her inter Marilyn Monroe out last night, I think she is truly beautiful and the best blonde on the face of this planet (real or not)!

Friday 9th May. The morning started with a few spoonfuls of hummus, the last dose of my anti-bleeding meds and as much water as I could get down before nil-by-mouth from 8am. Followed by a shower with special anti-bacterial soap that I had to leave on (not as yuck as I feared). Then a short car journey in the sunshine. It's hard to capture the strange sense of trepidation, of moments speeding past and just having to go with the flow.
I think I have a crush on all three leads in Being Human. :)
Again, not as pixelperfect as I'd liked it to be because BBC apparently doesn't put out larger promo photos any more, and I had to upscale it more than I prefer. Waah!

I was expecting a 2.5 to 3 inch incision, so this dressing was a lot bigger than I expected. It was a few days before I saw underneath. At this point I really was happy not to see. There was a lot of that weird pink paint down the tops of my thighs as well - it's the stuff they use to sterilise these days, as apparently too many people had reactions to the iodine they used to use.

A lot of the first week was spent napping, with the sofa providing a bit of variety during the day. It felt like a massive achievement to manage a shower (with help) on the Tuesday morning and put on some real clothes instead of PJs.
Nearly 3 weeks on, and managing my first solo shower feels like a big achievement too.

While researching my article, I talked to the mother of the owner of this house. She told me it was built by one of the Totterdown developers in 1896 as his own home. It is an impressive house, rich in details like these gargoyles. Quite possibly the figure on the right is a exaggerated portrait of the developer. Unlike Gothic cathedrals where gargoyles often served a useful purpose to funnel and spout water away from the building's fabric, these are decorative only.
How did it not dawn on me until this season that the new werewolf looks an awful lot like a popular...well, actually something of a Misfit of a rocket scientist? And will yet another Socha be the Doctor's new companion? :)
I'll miss Mitchell, George and Nina, but am lurving the new season so far.

The rest of Saturday wasn't much fun and involved a small amount of morphine and large amount of random rubbish TV, punctuated by some bladder-related agony which was too unpleasant and personal to write about.
