Just baked homemade bagels served on a wooden platter with butter on the side

This is a 2024 Google Earth image of the remains of the Bishopsgate station site looking east.

Bishopsgate was an Eastern Counties Railway, later Great Eastern, LNER & BR railway station located on the eastern side of Shoreditch High Street in Bethnal Green on the western edge of the East End of London.

It was in use from 1840 to 1875 as a passenger terminus when it was replaced by Liverpool Street station - the electrified main line from Liverpool Street can be seen in a cutting on the right-hand side of the overgrown site. Bethnal Green station is in the far distance where the main line to Cambridge forks left.

It survived as an important freight terminal until it was destroyed by fire in 1964. The substantial remains lay derelict until they were demolished in the early 2000s to make way for the new East London line extension opened in 2010, part of the new London Overground network. Shoreditch High Street station is seen on the left.

Incidentally Beigel Bake on Brick Lane is marked middle left.

A few Bagel shops on Brick Lane but this is officially known as "The Yellow One"

Architects; Neylan & Ungless, 1966. Ribbon windows on the second floor and enlarged windows on third floor indicate the units altered by ARU in 1994 (Florian Beigal and Philip Christou here) but there is no sign of continuing work on other units.

These architects produced some of the most original and intelligent housing schemes of 60-70s. Here they wanted to respond more explicitly and formally to the site topography, individual privacy and identification between individual and dwelling, integration of flats with housing, generation of a sense of place and community within a larger urban pattern and pedestrian and visual lines of movements.

The top of south facing sloping site forms the nub of the scheme forming car parking below terraces. This semi circular form acts as a community focus from which the majority of the housing units fan out like fingers. The narrow, blind lanes are punctuated by entrance doors and small kitchen windows to the family courtyard houses and tapering green wedges offer distant views of Essex.

The feeling of being in an ancient hilltop settlement is also reinforced by a strong fortified ring of housing which gave the nickname of 'Kasbah' to the scheme.
