While watching what I now understand are Wall Lizards on Portland, I noticed this sequence. The larger lizard on the right, as quick as flash, raced across the stones and grabbed the smaller one. It then disappeared down under the stones, only to reappear quite quickly without its prize. I have no idea what happened to the smaller lizard. It might well be part of the breeding pattern but can you help with this behaviour?
This species is a rare breeder in central BC, the bulk of its range being farther north. This male was putting on the typical loud yellowlegs alarm display when a potential predator is around the nest or young. However, one of the behavioural differences between this and its congener the Greater Yellowlegs is that the Lesser is not as aggressive - where the Greater will come flying right at your head, the Lesser pulls up short and circles around with less strident alarm calls. As well, the shorter, straighter bill, lighter legs and body, and fewer flank bars as compared to the Greater Yellowlegs are evident in this photo. Arctic Loon Lake, BC. July 04, 2015.
