I believe this is the UK-made L6 WOMBAT 120mm recoilless rifle anti-tank weapon, as used by the Australian Army in, I think, Korea and Vietnam.
As an anti-talk weapon, and a gun rather than a howitzer, it would have been fired with a low angle of trajectory in direct-fire more — that is, the crew could see the target, as opposed to a high-angle trajectory lobbing the round over obstacles to an unseen target.
Therefore, you'd simply not see it with the barrel angled up so high.
Moreover, the weapon is made recoilless by having the force of the projectile being thrown forward being balanced by the back-blast of hot gases emerging from the bell-shaped orifice at the rear. Angled up like this, the back-blast would thrown up dirt and rocks and debris all over the place, a risk to the crew and other soldiers nearby.

Surfers on Playa de la Escalera
The beach Playa de la Escalera, also called Playa del Aguila or Playa de las Escaleras, is an approximately 600 m long sandy beach on Fuerteventura. This spectacular bay is located on the northwest coast of the Canary Island, about 5 km south of the fishing village El Cotillo. The beach can only be reached via a gravel road along the coast. The best way is to follow the signs to Playa de Esquinzo, which awaits you about 1 km further south and is a popular spot for surfing.
After the gravel road you will find enough space to park your car. The descent down to Playa de la Escalera takes place via an adventurous and steep staircase, which has given its name to the beach, which translates as "beach of stairs". The bay is surrounded by mighty cliffs and offers a completely natural scenery. The water is clear and clean. The seabed and the beach are continuously covered with sand, only occasionally you will find rocks in the water, which give the overall picture together with the surrounding cliffs a rough note. Playa de las Escaleras is never overcrowded all year round, on the contrary: you often find a deserted beach here. Here you can walk along the beautiful beach and enjoy the view of the waves and the shimmering emerald turquoise water. Moreover, Playa de las Escaleras is a very changeable beach, whose splendour depends strongly on the tides. Therefore it is recommended to arrive at low tide, as the beach becomes quite narrow at high tide and loses much of its charm.
A good mix of waves and wind at Playa de las Escaleras offers surfers a good spot, which is anything but crowded due to its remoteness. Here, especially beginners have their fun, as the waves are ideal for getting to grips with this popular water sport. For advanced surfers, on the other hand, the conditions are too volatile, although on certain days of the year they can get their money's worth here. Bathing is also possible here and the way into the water is fun, because there are no disturbing stones or rocks. However, you should pay close attention to the waves and the current: There are no lifeguards on site and as on many beaches in Fuerteventura it can be really dangerous in the water under unfavourable conditions.
