I assume these are two different kinds of beets, but I don't know enough about them to be able to tell...

On a bright, sunny Wednesday afternoon, I ventured down to 23rd Street and 6th Avenue to drop off my laptop computer for a repair job. Afterwards, I thought I would walk over to Broadway and stroll up the street to see if I could find some interesting pictures; and then I got the crazy idea to take a cab down to the very end of Broadway -- near the Staten Island Ferry -- and walk all the way up Broadway to my neighborhood on 96th Street.
But then I decided that Broadway probably wouldn't be very interesting until I reached Canal Street ... so I had the cab-driver drop me off there, and began my walk northward. Who knows how far I would have gotten if I hadn't been distracted by a lively farmer's market in Union Square -- on 14th Street? Anyway, there's much more of Broadway to cover, and if I have the time and energy over the next few months, perhaps I will cover the entire length of this longest street in New York City, which extends all the way through Manhattan, Bronx, and into Yonkers...

051 will take our train from Wellington Bridge to Waterford.
Sugar beet trains ceased running at the end of the 2005 season when the last factory at Mallow closed, the line is now mothballed when passenger services ceased on the 20th September 2010.

Although I'm not a huge fan of beets they are a part of my diet. I will say that I do love them with gorgonzola cheese. YUM!!
Went to the farmer's market, bought some tasty beets.
Naturally, I had Lara stand in the sun with them for a photo.
Mmm, beets.

beets, creme fraiche, hazelnuts, preserved lime, dill, finished with horseradish. Sounds like a lot o' stuff, but really worked well together.
A message from Brooke to Yeyi
Billy and I spent Saturday and Sunday at his brother's house in Rockledge, Florida, This weekend.
Our family time with Phil, Becky and Brooke was wonderful. When Brooke asked about the "Boob Beret" that was in my backpack, we told her all about our dear friend, Aurelia. Of course Brooke wanted to send a message of support.
So here's our niece, Brooke, wearing her favorite t-shirt, and holding her favorite stuffed animal. She squealed with excitement when I told her that Aurelia's favorite animal is also monkey.
Yeyi, we're sending you lots of love from all of us down here in the Sunshine State!

For the new project. Quick edit from a shoot I did on Wednesday. In retrospect this kinda makes me feel like a crazy person.
This is the abandon Union Sugar Factory in Betteravia, California. That made sugar from Beets. In 1988 there was an explosion that burned 8 workers. In 1993 it was closed and along with it the town of Betteravia was abandoned.
I was so excited to finally start seeing something other than greens at the farmers market!! (I love greens but variety is nice too) had to paint this quickly so I could cook some of them!
mmm, i love local veg!

A can of small whole beets gets smaller and less whole. And the garage is filled with a spray of beety goodness, with a few larger chunks thrown in for good measure.
Cheers.
