All worker bees are female the males
(drones) are bigger, they mate with the new queen that is all they are made for.
If the hive becomes short on food the drones are thrown out to die. If they return one of the workers stings and kills him.

I bought this bee house last summer, not knowing for sure if it would actually attract bees. But yesterday, the second-warmest day so far this spring with an afternoon high temp of 79 F (26 C), there were at least a half-dozen bees swarming about the face of the thing. Encouraging.
At this time of year (Autumn) the social order in a Bumble bee nest begins to break down, anarchy rules, each bee for itself. The Queen bee stops producing certain chemcals which appear to control the rest of the nest. The Queen bee is often attacked and stung to death.

Trapped a honey bee on the kitchen window and gave it a spot of honey to eat whilst I took some pics. Released it back outside after
Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera) on a roadside verge by Exminster bypass (Sannerville Way, the A379), Devon, England. At a new site for me, along with Pyramidal and Southern Marsh- orchids.

;-) my first bee of the year, it was looking a bit bedraggled actually from the heavy downpour today! That's how I managed to get so close because it was acting very slow! I put a drop of sugar honey syrup on m y finger and encouraged the bee to walk onto my finger - it soon got the idea

There were probably over 30 bees working away on this plant. It's one of the only times I can get close enough to them to get some good shots. Had a dozen or so good ones to pick from.
