David was near the northwest corner of Dearborn and Randolph. I asked him how he was doing and he said "I'm blessed". He's been out here for two years. Even so, he was a positive, optimistic man.At night he rides the train, because the shelters are dirty and have bedbugs. "I've had some drug problems in the past, but I'm in a treatment program and I'm doing better now. You just take one day at a time....sometimes one hour or one minute at a time...you gotta crawl before you can walk."
We were originally planning on going to Paris but changed our minds due to all the bedbug stories. Amsterdam was on wife's bucket list and I hadn't been there in about 15 years so it was nice to get back. We didn't have any must sees on our list so we happily wandered around aimlessly - the best way to go.
I took these photos in mid-October 2023.
I didn't want to get too close.
On a pink Beautyrest mattress. Near a dumpster, at the next building. Some of them were moving pretty fast.
Bedbugs is the common name, but entomologists call them bed bugs, two words.
I just read too much about them. Ugh!
Odd, Flickr says "bed bugs" is an invalid tag. Although it will accept nonsense.

Brooklyn, NY - I painted this back in November 2013 but never bothered to get a photo of it til the other day. It was intended to be an empty Cicada shell with the word "Dislocation" written in faded script within. Due to the placement of it (Bushwick, Brooklyn) more people interpreted it as a bedbug and left it at that. I guess that just plays into whatever stupid statement I was trying to make when I painted this... Something something something Gentrification something something I'm so mis-understood something something something something something something Brooklyn...
The other day, while I was walking through the mountains with no fixed direction, I came across this bedbug that seemed to be on pause, completely immobile on the leaf. I don't know how long it had been there, but it seemed to be in no hurry for anything. Without thinking too much about it, I took out my camera and was able to capture this close-up.
I couldn't tell exactly what species it was, but what struck me most was how its colours stood out on the leaf, almost as if it had posed for the photo. The texture of the background, the shades of green and yellow, and the detail of its legs resting on the finely furred surface made it worth a stop.
I hope you like it.

Andre's story is amazing. 30 years ago, he got involved in a street gang and started selling drugs, because his Mom was robbed and he needed a way to provide for her. In the course of that lifestyle, he was shot, taken to the hospital, and eventually flat-lined on the table. It was at that time that he had an out-of-body experience, where he felt like he was quickly falling. He remembered saying, "I don't want to die like this". Then he felt something grip his arms, legs, neck, and sides and lift him up. He was then in a place where he felt nothing but love--no lust, no fear, no need. And there were billions of beings all with equal love, and then the greatest love approached him and it was so bright he couldn't look at it and he fell on his knees and bowed his head. It smelled like roses where he was. Then air filled his lungs and he saw the lights of the operating room and "That's when I believed in God", he said. (I'm paraphrasing his experience, but it was amazing...). It took him 14 years before he even shared his experience with anyone (he was afraid people would think he was crazy). He said there's a purpose for his life--to tell people about God. Andre sits out here to get food, because "the food they serve at the shelter is horrible--you don't even know what it is". Plus, they have bedbugs, so he usually sleeps on the train or at O'Hare. Andre was so positive. He said he just wants to make people happy. He truly is rich and has what so many people don't have--contentment, thankfulness, and joy. He was so special--a rare soul.
I met Rod just south of Wacker Drive on State Street. He's been out here for three years. "God's got me", he said, "no matter how low I am, he's taking care of me". He was so nice to talk to. He's stayed in shelters before, but the bedbugs are bad. "Most people would rather sleep outside", he said. His biggest need is clothes and shoes.
He was just wondering if there was any help that could be offered. We spoke and I know I couldn't do much to help his situation other than lend an ear and offered him some small funds. He said he had had a home, but recently decided to get out of there as the landlord was not listening to his requests of helping with a bedbug problem. Now once again homeless he was looking for a new place.
When I asked him if he had a message for the world he only said that he was just a poor man trying to find a place to stay.
I gave him a heads up that the weather was turning cold over the weekend. Forecasts of snow and ice in an area where temperatures in the 40s were considered 'cold'. He thanked me for the heads up and before we parted ways I asked for a portrait.
Hope you are able to stay out of the cold this weekend, Joe!

James was on the northeast corner of Clark and Madison. He's been out here for four years. Right now he's staying on Lower Wacker. "I don't like staying at the shelter either, because they have bedbugs." We walked together for about three blocks. "I was in an accident and I broke my back...that's why I look like this (bent over)." His biggest needs? "I want a place where I can do laundry and get cleaned up."
He's worked a lot of factory jobs and is skilled in many areas. His goal is to get off the street and be reunited with his family. "I'm an honest person, a dependable person, and a good person."
Alonzo was on the southwest corner of Canal and Randolph. He was visibly shivering, despite all his layers. He's been out here for two years. "I'm from Mississippi...I was there when my daddy passed away." What he needs now is an ID, since someone stole his wallet. He had a job, then things got bad. He usually sleeps on the train. He doesn't stay at some shelters because of bedbugs and violence. "It's like being in prison", he said. "I'm a good person. It's when I get depressed that I get into trouble". He trusts God that things will get better. He was standing on this particular corner because sometimes other homeless folks get territorial and want him to move away from their turf.
Normally the focus of my page is on trucks and other assorted vehicles, but I couldn't resist giving a shoutout to my hometown Nationals for winning the 2019 World Series! #fightfinished #letsgoNats!
This shot was taken in late March after Allied Van Lines agent Victory Van of DC had just returned to northern Virginia after hauling the team gear from spring training in West Palm Beach, FL to Nationals Park in DC.
DDT genuinely worked better than any product available today. The only problem is that it came with HUGE consequences.
I bought this can from an antique store in Connecticut. It's still full of liquid and doesn't leak. I keep it tightly sealed and use it as a display piece of 1940s/50s Americana.

Night night. Don't let the bedbugs bite...
I'm done for the night...
John was standing on the northwest corner of Lake and Clark. He's been homeless for six months. He either sleeps on the train or outside. "I don't like staying in the shelter because of lice and bedbugs..." He needs clothes, food, and shoes. "I gotta keep hustling", he said, "because if I stop, you'll end up finding me in an alley somewhere..." Sometimes he'll walk to pass the time. "One day, I walked for three or four hours. Then my stomach was growling".

The hotel is in Swan Street which is part of the B3051 which is a notable B-road, stretching approximately 17.4 kilometres through the scenic countryside of north Hampshire. It begins in the quaint village of Overton, marked by narrow streets and traditional traffic lights at the intersection with the B3400. Heading north, it crosses the West of England Main Line near Overton Station, offering a glimpse of the region's railway heritage. The road then winds through a series of picturesque landscapes, including the summit at White Hill, before reaching the historic village of Kingsclere. Here, the B3051 intersects with the A339 bypass via a staggered crossroads. Continuing its journey, the road ascends Little Knowl Hill and passes through Ashford Hill, eventually turning east towards Brimpton Common and entering Berkshire. Its terminus is at Heath End, where it meets the A340 at a roundabout. The B3051's route is steeped in local history and provides a vital link between the communities it serves, showcasing the rural charm of the English countryside.
Kingsclere is a charming village steeped in history, nestled in the Hampshire countryside of England. It boasts a rich past that dates back to the times of King Alfred, who mentioned the village in his will between 872 and 888. The name 'Kingsclere' itself suggests royal connections, with 'clere' possibly meaning 'bright' or 'clearing'. This picturesque village is not only known for its historical significance but also for its vibrant community and beautiful rural landscapes. It serves as a tranquil escape, approximately equidistant from the bustling towns of Basingstoke and Newbury, offering a peaceful retreat with easy access to modern amenities. Kingsclere's heritage is proudly displayed in its architecture, like the Norman-era St. Mary's church, and in local legends, such as the tale of King John's encounter with a bedbug at a local inn. Today, Kingsclere continues to thrive, balancing its historical roots with a forward-looking spirit, as seen in the initiatives by Kingsclere Estates Ltd. to support sustainable ventures and create opportunities for growth in the region.
