Newest Day-of-the-Dead Cat pin/pendant. It will be on display at Indigenous in June as part of the feline-themed Juniper-in-June show. I purposely edged this with similar beads as the "CatFish" bead painting.

The face was hand-sculpted from Sculpey, then painted. It was mounted to thick interfacing, and I did the bead embroidery around it. Collaborative piece between me and my friend Heather.

Seed bead embroidery, 6.5"x9.5". Started it in April 2008, but didn't work on it constantly. It was an enormous learning experience regarding bead embroidery, and is my first major project larger than my big barrettes. Seed bead sizes were 6/0-15/0. If you could suggest a motif for my next project, what would it be? I designed and executed it from start to finish.

Bead embroidery of my daughter and son-in-law on upholstery fabric, 2006 8" x 10"

Felt tapestry with embroidered seed beads completed 2007, 25" x 25"; I felted the background in the early to mid 1980's during a workshop with Beth Beede at the Farmington Valley Arts Center.

New! One bead-embroidered white Maltese pin/ pendant with pink bow in her hair. This piece was created by stitching tiny glass seed beads to felt (2-3 beads at a time) using a strong nylon thread. White beaded fringe was layered using size 15 seed beads. The beaded fringe actually moves when you to touch it, and reveals more seed beads beneath! Several different shades of white, gray, black & pink beads were used. Finally, a 1" (2.5cm) pin was sewn to the back. Piece is backed with Ultrasuede & signed by The Lone Beader. This is a unique gift idea for any dog-lover!

There's something child-like, playful, happy about both the pattern and colors in this piece. It makes me remember, with huge gratitude, my childhood teachers:

** My mom, who taught me to sew very early in life, guiding my hands to make neat, little stitches, and later how to embroider and make my own patterns.

** My grandmother, who taught me to use her treadle sewing machine when I was only 6 years old.

**My fifth grade homeschool teacher, who taught me origami.

These three women blessed me and my hands with their wisdom. My hands are a lot like my mom's were. I often think of her when I notice my hands.

Finally, it's interesting that I chose to include a bone hand charm with an eye on it. I think of my hands as a way of seeing, another source of vision.

Political freedom, such as we have in this country (not perfect, but better than in many countries), is a huge blessing. On my piece, I represent this type of freedom with a 1944 liberty dime.

The ink-pen point represents a related freedom - the freedom to write and speak our beliefs and thoughts. I include the blessing of a personal freedom, which I grant myself, to write honestly and freely in my journals, blogs, and books.

The butterfly represents spiritual freedom. It has something to do with allowing myself the freedom to explore spirituality in a way that is not boxed by any traditional religious concepts.

The bird? Well, birds fly, bless them. I want to be a bird in my next life, free to fly long distances, swoop and soar, and ride the winds.
