Two laser-cut Wentworth jigsaws and two hand-cut vintage jigsaws are displayed on this table.

Centre: Box of Wentworth 140pc Road Meets Rail by Malcolm Root. This jigsaw was assembled during the house party. Tom Tyler was very fond of Malcolm Root transport nostalgic images and Wentworth did many whilst he was consulting for them.

Centre & Lower Right: Wentworth 250pc Going North for the Holidays - St Pancras. The box doesn't credit the artist. This was assembled at the house party on the same table as the Macolm Root jigsaw.

Top: The star of the table is the rare vintage brand Lucilla, featuring the Cunard Liner, The Mauretania - and I didn't get the piece count. The pieces were large and decorative but we were surprised that it didn't show the edge pieces with finials found in all the other known examples of Lucillas, and which we thought were definitive. Once assembled however it proved to have an attractive overall cut with vertical rows of spiral wave cuts and diagonal movement in the cuts separating pieces off.

The box is typical of all the other examples, being covered in wallpaper, with extra wallpaper details added to decorate it and a hand-written label.

Centre & Right Edge: AVN Jones South Africa Series no 13 The "Flower Parade" in Adderley Street, Cape Town. Another colourful painting by C.E. Turner features in this c1930's, 150 piece fully interlocking plywood puzzle, supplied in a customised box rather than the generic "Springbok" style box with no guide picture.

"The South African Series, AVN Jones

Very interesting series of puzzles, cut in varying sizes and featuring a wide range of subject material. The boxes promote "Artistic Reproductions in fine colours of Picturesque Scenes in South Africa" and "Mountains, Waterfalls, Wild Nature, Sea views, Sport and Social Life". Also advertised as Springbok Series. The series appears to have been expanded considerably throughout its existence, believed to have started in the late 1920's and probably continuing in to the late 1930's. Most, but not all, have a list of available titles on the box-base and this is perhaps the best indicator of a puzzle's individual age, with those listing the smallest number of titles representing the earliest examples."

En début de nuit nous avions ceci. (nuages)

Last shot before I left. My little blue is at the far end. It was a very wet drive back, and those dinky little wind shield wipers are more comical than helpful.

BCD member Michael Foster has been collecting Wentworth jigsaw catalogues from their earliest times. The Whimsy newsletter now consisted of 6-side A4 fold out leaflet, with a shaped top edge on the first page.

Whimsy 12 (Spring 2001) saw the introduction of the new sizes for all club puzzles and personal puzzles – 750pc, 500pc to replace the 425pc size. The Whimsy was given ‘a makeover’. Jigsaws were paired in coloured boxes, indicating they shared a cut – presumably to reduce the workload in cut-creation from introduction of the new sizes. A second image, The Mad Hatter, joined the Osterweil Alice in Wonderland Series. Factory vits by appointment resumed. Bunny Money discounts were Red £1, Turquoise £1.50, Green £2, Purple £5.
