many were still hanging on trees, a few were agitating to take flight

Every sunset over 1 million bats fly from a cave near to the city of Battambang. Such an amazing sight and one I will never forget.

Have you ever seen bats?

Male Brazilian Tailless Bats leaving the Orient Mine in the San Luis Valley of Colorado.

.

The Orient Mine, active from 1880 through 1932, was the largest producer of iron ore in Colorado, having produced about two million tons of limonite. It is believed that the name Orient came from the Old French word meaning east (rising sun), since the mine is located on the eastern side of the San Luis Valley. (There is no evidence of Chinese or other Asian miners working in the mine.) The Orient Mine had two associated town sites - one in the upper area in the early years and the lower town site which was active in the early 1900's. Today nothing remains of the towns except stories and a few foundations.

.

At its peak, the town of Orient had a population of more than 400, supporting a library, barber shop, school, 2 restaurants, a boarding house for 300, a saloon, a milling company and other small businesses including a supplier of work clothing.

.

Today, the Orient Mine is significant because for the last forty years or so it has been home to nearly 250,000 migratory bats. Bats were first documented at the Orient Mine in 1967 and have played a vital role in the chemical- and pesticide-free agriculture of the Valley. The Orient Mine is a designated Colorado Natural Area and Colorado Division of Wildlife Watchable Wildlife site.

An interesting and challenging theme from Di for this month's FOTF. Here are the upside down items I found in my recent travels.

I didn't feel standing on my head to get any further images would be anything other than disastrous! These spectacled bats were just hanging around in the Atherton Tablelands, the other images from Cooktown

Happy FOTF.

As Halloween approaches I thought I would post a photo of the Saline Valley road sign. I thought it was appropriate. As I was getting ready to leave before sunset, hoping to get to camp early. A man who had just flown into the springs approaches me and asks "if I could help him go get his camping gear from my plane?" At first I was reluctant because I really wanted to take photos for the sunset in the dunes. I ended up helping him as that is what you do out there. I know someone would do it for me. This trip to his plane and back took awhile. However, once I was done helping him and on my way out to the dunes I was greeted with the perfect moment to capture this sign post. I might not have stopped here if I didn't stop to help that man. What I thought was a lost opportunity turned into a great moment! Thankful he stopped me.

Megabats constitute the family Pteropodidae of the order Chiroptera (bats). They are also called fruit bats, Old World fruit bats, or, especially the genera Acerodon and Pteropus, flying foxes. The evolution of megabats has been determined primarily by genetic data, as the fossil record for this family is the most fragmented of all bats. Megabats likely evolved in Australia, with the common ancestor of all living pteropodids. Many megabat lineages likely originated in Melanesia, then dispersed to mainland Asia, the Mediterranean, and Africa over time.

combination of 3 images showing 3 different flight paths of 3 individuals respectively under stroboscopic effect. This was the first time I successfully used this technique (after several failed attempts) to capture multiple images of a flying bat in a single frame. It's a little tricky but for me the result is both fascinating and rewarding.

My next experiment would be using multiple flash units, multiple camera systems to capture multiple bat flight paths simultaneously, to create a multiple 3d bat mayhem......hmmmm....probably the results would be multiple terrible failure :)

Footnote :

All these shots have not been possible without the help of my wild subjects behaving in the way I wanted them to. A big hug to all those lovely bats !

Another big factor to my success, it’s of course the location which happen to be in the vicinity of my in-law’s house at Phoenix Walk, sg

That gives me the full liberty to do the things (especially setting up of the equipment) I wanted and at the best comfort without having to track miles into the forest in the dead of the night dragging tons of equipment with me at the mercy of the weather. At the end, it’s a dream realised capturing fast-moving subjects in darkness. Great satisfaction. Hope you enjoy the shots as much as I do.

Believe it or not, bats were swarming around me at this moment, but for some reason, not a single one showed up in this, or any of the other photos from that evening. I had to leave the shutter open for... two seconds, I think. Could it be that they moved too fast to have registered? I'd have thought that they would at least show up as grey streaks. I dunno, maybe they were just messing with me, and moved out of the field of view just as the shutter opened.

Approximately 5 million bats stream out of this cave in Cambodia at dusk every night.

I think every one know what happens if you use flash ?! :)))) I did! Than i had to get down to ground! It was hundreds of them just rushing out from cave.

While taking the trash cans out early this evening, I noticed (how could I not) that the bats were out in full force. This is a composite. The most I saw in one view was 4. The are very cool. If it wasn't for bats, we would be overrun with flying insects.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the belfry...
