Congress Bridge Bats in Austin, TX

The Congress Avenue bridge spans Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin and is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. The colony is estimated at 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats. Each night from mid-March to November, the Congress Bridge Bats bats emerge from under the bridge to blanket the sky as they head out to forage for food. This event has become one of the most spectacular and unusual tourist attractions in Texas. The most spectacular bat flights are during hot, dry August nights, when multiple columns of bats emerge.

Roll you around me until my heart beats only for you.

My breath will grow warm from your kiss.”

Not exactly sure what species, there are several, and we saw a few different ones, regardless, we had fun. This was a bit more technical (took several lights, etc.) than point and click, but was really fun to see how many bats are really out there....we saw dozens and dozens once they came to feed.

This is a patriarchal family group sleeping under a banana leaf that has been carefully chewed along the center vein to allow it to "tent" over the roosting bats. They will use the same roost for several days, leaving to hunt at night and returning to sleep away the days. The bats are very small, roughly an inch or so in diameter. These tiny bats are frugivors and tend to eat the fruit from only one species of date, which puts them on the way to being threatened.
