Zhoucheng batik village.

We visited a batik shop, wanting to see the batik making process, but didn't get much explanation. They were more interested in selling than showing

Tie-dyeing originated from the central plains area in ancient China over 1,000 years ago. Being one of the locations of this craftsmanship, Zhoucheng Village near Butterfly Spring in Dali Old City is famous as the 'Hometown of Bai People's Tie-dyeing Art'.

Tie-dyeing is a technology of printing flower patterns on cloth. As the name suggests, the process is divided into "tie" and "dye". Tie refers to making the cloth into certain shapes by pinching, creasing and flanging it according to the flower patterns. They are then sew or tie tightly together to make a bunch of knots. The aim of tying the knots is to dye the untied part while retaining the original color of the knotted parts. The tighter the knots are tied, the better the effect of the color printing will be achieved.

The dyeing process involves first soaking the 'knots' into clear water, followed by immersing them in the dye vat for a period of time before taking them out to dry. After drying, they are again put back in the dye vat and the process is repeated until a satisfactory color is achieved. Once dried, stitches are taken out of the knots and the cloth is smoothen out to reveal that part of the cloth which was sewn and form beautiful flower patterns and the dye crease marks.

I don't see a lot of batiks on the swap/destash groups, so I'm just trying to gauge interest. I have about 16 yards and a set of 48 strips that are looking for new homes.

(Sorry for that string hanging down from the top bundle!)

I came up with my idea for this from Anne's Peace, Love, and Happiness works. There was something about the colors and the lines.

So I pulled out my batik scrap boxes and then pulled every strip and string from the boxes. I pieced and pieced and then added some more and had no idea what I was making with it. Then I realized how nice a quilted batik pillow case would look with my Tetris quilt when I flipped it over. So I added in a few more strips one way and then some to make it a little longer and it was ready to be quilted. Just some random squiggly lines here and there and I made it into my pillow case.

I created this in my home in Lanoka Harbor, NJ.

In Batik making, the most popular motifs are leaves and flowers but can be used to reflect the kampong life, dance etc. This piece was used to reflect the Malaysian culture as it represents free flowing ideas and imagination. The orchid in particular symbolizes love, luxury, beauty and strength. Batik has been considered as a national dress in Malaysia.

The piece was used to help me experiment with different mediums. First wax is applied onto cotton or silk then “canting” is applied, when the colour is dry completely, a layer of sodium silicate is applied onto the fabric to fix the color and left for at least 4 hours, the fabric is then boiled in soda water for a few minutes, which removes the wax, and then hung up to dry. The batik is finished and ready to be worn or hung up on a wall.
