Bohemian Waxwing - Bombycilla garrulus

Waxwings are an irruptive winter visitor to the UK some years we get 1,000s visiting if the Scandinavian berry crop has failed as the migrate west from Siberia.

This year only small numbers have turned up so the chances of finding any have been quite slim, three in an Apple tree on my usual walking route to Big Waters was a nice bonus.

I’ve got most of the ‘classic’ book photo poses of these birds in previous winters but when one of them dropped to the floor and started having a bath it gave me an opportunity to get something different.

A bit of fun. I noticed these patterns in my Badedas bath! Whilst all the big mass of "froth" was at the tap end, this was at the other end.

I haven't been posting for ages, as at the end of last year I moved house, not from my choice. Having M.E. it was traumatic. I'm still recovering!

A group of European or Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) enjoying the water in the bird bath.

We filled the bath twice this day. The birds get in there and splash it all out! Such fun!

i don't think I've ever been out taking sunsets without coming back soaking wet. Bathtime by Tindersticks has a certain resonance. There can be few better feelings than to walk alone on a dropping tide watching the sun slowly sink in the West. At every turn new surfaces and features are exposed, so many choices. Rocks in rock pools are so hard to resist. To me, skies are the most important feature though, and make the evening. A beautiful bathtime.

She felt a little in need of a wash and brush up!!

I returned to Bray’s Pit a couple of day’s ago, and the white duck was still there (it’s the only white one on the pond), and I took this sequence of shots as she very vigorously bathed herself. I clicked away and it wasn’t until I downloaded the photos that I really saw the funny positions she contorted herself into to make sure she was thoroughly clean all over!!

We've been away to Krabi over the half term holiday and the undoubted highlight was to spend some time at a sanctuary for retired working elephants. Having worked hard for many years these creatures are now being well looked after in their later years and it was good to see them looking so happy. We scrubbed them down, massaged them with mud and thoroughly beautified them. They were clearly loving the attention as their eyes kept rolling back in their heads in ecstasy!
