A group of European or Common Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) enjoying the water in the bird bath.

We filled the bath twice this day. The birds get in there and splash it all out! Such fun!

She felt a little in need of a wash and brush up!!

I returned to Bray’s Pit a couple of day’s ago, and the white duck was still there (it’s the only white one on the pond), and I took this sequence of shots as she very vigorously bathed herself. I clicked away and it wasn’t until I downloaded the photos that I really saw the funny positions she contorted herself into to make sure she was thoroughly clean all over!!

i don't think I've ever been out taking sunsets without coming back soaking wet. Bathtime by Tindersticks has a certain resonance. There can be few better feelings than to walk alone on a dropping tide watching the sun slowly sink in the West. At every turn new surfaces and features are exposed, so many choices. Rocks in rock pools are so hard to resist. To me, skies are the most important feature though, and make the evening. A beautiful bathtime.

Bathtime voyage 🛁

A couple of months ago, I created a series of tutorials for Professional Photographers of America where I shared my full creative process and approach to photography, how I plan, shoot, and edit an image from start to finish. They are available on their YouTube channel!

This concept started with a @fdphotostudio_ny that I used before. While looking at their website, I found a room with dark textured walls and a vintage white bathtub. That image instantly sparked an idea. I wanted the tub to be the center of the story, surrounded by whimsical “soap bubbles and bath foam” made from white and clear balloons and using it as a visual metaphor. A bright orange origami paper boat symbolizes childhood, imagination and voyage. It pops against the dark background and matches the model’s hair.

We arrived at the studio and got right to work. First, I folded the orange paper boat. Then I moved to the balloon bubble bath setup. I used an electric pump to blow them up and speed up the process, but tying them and attaching them to the balloon tape took forever and we wasted a lot of studio time! I also realized I had bought the wrong kind of white balloons. They weren’t as bright as I’d hoped. Not ideal, but nothing I couldn’t fix in Photoshop.

Once the setup was done, the model Marisa Roper arrived. She wore a nude-colored top to keep the look consistent with the concept, with her hair up and natural makeup. Normally, people don’t wear clothes when taking a bath, but I wanted the model to be comfortable and the content to be social media friendly.

For a bit of magic, I used the Practical Magic & Innovation SmokeNinja Pro haze machine with a bubble attachment. It created bubbles filled with smoke that burst into little clouds. It looked beautiful, but the room filled up fast, so I had to be careful not to overdo it.

In editing, I went for cool, muted tones with a deep teal wall and kept the orange boat vibrant to create a strong complementary color scheme. I added more balloons and created more brightness separation between them. I also added smoke and smoke bubbles.

Pancho was unimpressed with the cold hose bath I gave him. He must be accustomed to a warm-water tub bath. With bubbles and scented oil. Rose petals, maybe.

Pancho made #30 in Explore! Thank you!

Male Common Kingfisher. He must have been in and out of the water 6 or 7 times just bathing.

We've been away to Krabi over the half term holiday and the undoubted highlight was to spend some time at a sanctuary for retired working elephants. Having worked hard for many years these creatures are now being well looked after in their later years and it was good to see them looking so happy. We scrubbed them down, massaged them with mud and thoroughly beautified them. They were clearly loving the attention as their eyes kept rolling back in their heads in ecstasy!
