Looking along one of the spectacular arcades that surround the market place to one of the main streets of the town (village really) and one of the town gates in the distance.
Monpazier is one of the finest examples of a bastide town in France and stands on the southern edge of the Dordogne region. Built in 1284 by Edward I of England it follows the classic plan of a bastide, built round a square surrounded by arcades, with a large church near the centre.
It is listed as 'one of the most beautiful villages in France'.
Bastide-Niel est le nom d'une zone d'aménagement concertée (ZAC), située sur la rive droite de la Garonne, à Bordeaux.
La réalisation de ce vaste projet de 35 hectares et 3.400 logements a été confiée à l'urbaniste néerlandais Winy Maas.
Cette zone d'aménagement, située dans le quartier de La Bastide, doit son nom à la présence de l'ancienne Caserne Niel, aujourd'hui devenue l'Espace Darwin.

* Like a green window. This is 'La Bastide' area, in Bordeaux French town. In that place we could recognize those typical stone-built houses, with usually freestone, or 'Tuffeau' stone. This place is on the right side of the Garonne river. It is an old industrial place and was the path to reach the river for the 'entre-deux-mers' region (between Garonne and Dordogne rivers), a very famous wine production place.

If "the wise man built his house upon a rock" the bastide village of Montjoi be sage indeed. The stones of the buildings seem to grow organically out of the rock on which the village sits.
Standing before Cordes-sur-Ciel, I was struck by how perfectly this medieval bastide lives up to its poetic name. As evening light began to filter through the gathering clouds, I witnessed the village literally suspended between earth and sky, wrapped in an almost mystical atmosphere.
My intention was to capture not just the architectural beauty of this 13th-century Gothic gem, but the ethereal quality that has made it legendary. Those dramatic rays of light piercing through the clouds seemed to illuminate the very soul of this Cathar stronghold, creating a scene that felt both timeless and magical.
I wanted to convey the sense of wonder that strikes visitors when they first glimpse this hilltop citadel emerging from the Tarn countryside. The interplay between the ancient stones warmed by golden light and the theatrical sky above tells the story of a place where history and legend intertwine. This is Cordes as the medieval pilgrims might have seen it - a vision suspended between heaven and earth.
This is what you want to see after such an encounter.
Right after seeing this bear, we encountered another one less than a kilometer south of the marsh. Last year, we ran into one at the north end.

Cette bastide navarraise a été fondée créé en 1288 par Claire de Rabastens, sur un coteau en bordure de la rivière Aran, d'où son nom gascon Bastida de Clarença.
The medieval 'bastide' village of Domme sits on a precipitous cliff above the Dordogne valley. Remarkably, running underneath it is a spectacular series of stunning natural caverns with stalactites, stalagmites and reflecting pools. The entrance is via the market hall (I think the lady on the left is about to enter).
The caves (grottes) have been used in the past to shelter the town's inhabitants during the Hundred Years' War, though the upper part was only discovered in 1954. There are more than 400m of stalactite filled galleries and a glass lift takes you back up to the surface and the famous viewpoint over the valley. (Well worth google imaging the Domme caves.)

Built in the 13th century, the towers were used to imprison the Knights Templar between 1307 and 1318, evidence of which can still be seen in the 'graffiti' that they left behind, etched into the walls.

- Une partie des galeries pavées de pierres tombales entourant l'Église, ainsi que le cimetière juste à côté.
J'avoue que j'ai trouvé assez étrange de déambuler autour des galeries latérales ainsi que sous le porche d'entrée, foulant ainsi les dalles funéraires... en me demandant si ce n'était pas une sorte de sacrilège, ou si c'était banalisé ! Comme d'autres personnes visiblement hésitantes, alors que certains ne s'en préoccupaient pas, j'ai essayé de contourner ou d'enjamber ces quelques dalles lorsque je le pouvais, l'endroit étant encore utilisé par les descendants des premières familles du village.
J'ai lu par la suite que c'est là que se réunissaient jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe, les représentants de la paroisse qui délibéraient et votaient sur toutes les affaires intéressant la communauté.
Domme is a bastide village (medieval fortified town) that lies 150 metres above the Dordogne river. Constructed in 1281 at the behest of the French King Philip III, Domme was to serve as a key strategic defence in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Eventually captured by the English in 1346 for a time, the town came through the Hundred Years War relatively unscathed and today this walled village is a remarkedly unspoilt reminder of this past.
Domme is in the list of 'The most beautiful villages of France'.

Fresque "La Tradicion" réalisée par un collectif d'artistes uruguayens en 2019, à l'occasion du festival de street art "Points de Vue" qui a lieu chaque année à Bayonne et s'est étendu depuis peu à quelques villages du Pays basque.
La façade peinte est celle du local abritant les costumes d'Esperantza, groupe de danses basques du village.
