On the first Saturday of November 1984, the Pacific Railroad Society ran a day trip from Los Angeles to Barstow, California. It was called the "Desert Scout," in honor of a Santa Fe train from days gone by. The highlight of the trip was getting to ride over the freight only (at that time) Third District of Santa Fe's Los Angeles Division between Fullerton and San Bernardino.
At Barstow, the train rolled through the middle of Santa Fe's massive yard and turned on the balloon track there. It then backed into the passenger station and laid over for an hour or two before the return to LA.
There were lots of things to see, such as the parade of trains on the main line. Across the tracks from the depot, several ex-Amtrak SDP40Fs were parked at the old ATSF diesel shop, awaiting their turn at rebuilding down in San B. It was a fine day.

Sometimes a girl needs to go where she can sit pretty and meet a guy, right? Well, doesn't this make more sense than some barstool??
(Of course, I'm not going to be bought a drink... but I might get a free ride *grin*)

In the outside booths I found this pitcher atop a barstool in a galvanized metal bin with a bonus twig. Always good day when I find a nice still life at an antique shop.
A barstool literally covered in sackcloth, which goes really well with the naturalistic decor of the Troppo Cafe.
Barstool pose blatantly showing off my nails. I managed to keep those on for 2 whole days last week and managed most things with them, but taking contact lenses out of your eyes last thing at night is a nightmare, eh girls? Nottingham 5th Dec 2019
This week's challenge in Project SoulPancake is called Art at Arm's Reach. It goes a little something like this:
STEP ONE
Scavenge around your desk, barstool, couch cushions for anything handy. And we mean anything: paper clips, poker chips, fake eyelashes, junk mail, bullet casings.
STEP TWO
CREATE ART.
STEP THREE
Bask in your artistic brilliance.
Repeat as desired.
I can't even begin to tell you how therapeutic this was. As a kid, I always loved arts and crafts. In fact, there is still, to this day, a craft box in my parents' basement that's filled with all sorts of random odds and ends. Toilet paper rolls, toothpicks, cotton balls, q-tips, acorns, popsicle sticks, string, empty bandaid tins, glitter, glue, stickers...anything and everything my mom thought I could possibly want to use. And on rainy days or really any day where I was bored and looking for something to do, my mom would pull out the craft box and I'd make something. I'd forgotten how much fun it is. To just completely focus your attention and energy onto creating.
And really, I guess that's what my photography is to me these days. That tiny slice of my day devoted to nothing but me and whatever I can dream up and create. I think that's why I love it so much. It's my time to get away from whatever else is bothering me and channel my energy into something that is purely mine.
But after this little challenge, I think I may be putting aside some time to do crafts again too. Now I understand why Joel is getting so much out of his Made Project.
Special thanks to Shannon who gave me this tin of monkey mints. And to my favorite wine (Good Harbor Fishtown White) for providing me with the cork. :)
