In 1720, another church of wood was been built in Bârsana. In 1791, the Monastery was abolished. On the hearth Monastery, only the Church and Abbey remain.

To protect the church from desecration and destruction, the believers from Bârsana moved it closer to the village, in 1806. In this place it is found nowadays.

The old church of Bârsana has a particular cultural importance, being included in the UNESCO list of heritage buildings. This church is a valuable historical monument and it expects to be returned in the old place and reassigned to the current complex of the Monastery of Bârsana.

Barsana Monastery is actually a monastic complex of wooden constructions specifically to Maramures.

north of the the road between Nănești and the well known Bârsana monastery, you can find an area of low mountains and green hills. A good location for those who want to to take a more moody pictures - because of the fog you might see there in the morning. but i had no luck that morning. it was so clear i could see the baltic sea. fortunately i have more than enough clouds from Iceland so i brought some photoshoply :)

Barsana Holi : Barsana Holi Festival:

One of the major festivals of India, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun which is the month of March as per the Gregorian calendar.

Entire city wears a festive look when it is time for Holi celebration. At Barsana, the 'Latthmaar holi' is famous. The men of Nandgao known as 'gops' raid Barsana and try to mark their victory over the temple of Radhika by furling flag over it while the women of Barsana try to fend them off with long bamboo sticks. The men are well padded because they cannot retaliate to the women and can only try to keep them off by sprinkling colored water on them. In case they get trapped, they are dressed as a lady in a sari and cosmetics are applied and they are made to dance like a lady. It is said that even Lord Krishna was made to dance like this by the 'gops' of Barsana.

Next day, the same scene is repeated in Nandgao as men of Barsana raid the village to win over temple of Shriji and women of Nandgao beat them with sticks to keep them off. Holi songs known as 'Hori' are sung by the men and women and are mostly based on the dialogues exchanged between Krishna and Radhika.

According to the legend, menfolk from #Nandgaon visit Barsana to celebrate ‘Holi’ with women from Barsana. When these people come visiting, they are welcomed by these women with sticks and are beaten up. The bunch from Nandgaon comes well prepared for it, with a padded shield to counter the attacks. These sticks are called ‘laths’, hence this holi-celebration is famously known as ‘Lathmaar’ holi.

Next day, the women from #Barsana (since the women don’t go, men and trans-genders dressed as women represent women from the village) go to Nandgaon to celebrate #Holi with the men from the village. They are welcomed with #water and #colour everywhere.
