I worked in several bars, putting myself through school, then just making a living.

I learned a lot about people and what kind of person I wanted to be. I liked it. I liked the people I worked with, the people I met. Most of them anyway. It can be dangerous, it put me in situations and brought out parts of me that scared me sometimes. But that's probably part of what I liked about it.

You see everything there: love, death, loneliness, sex, joy, rage. It's extreme. Life, distilled.

Bear and cat, they are friends.

These are photos of Bar Tailed Godwits. They have what might be the most difficult migration route of any bird. They winter in New Zealand and summer in Alaska. While maybe not the longest distance, it has to be the most difficult. The spring migration flies non-stop from New Zealand to to mud flats in the Yellow Sea, then the short hop to west coastal Alaska, then in the fall they fly non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand, a flight that can cover 10 days without a break and 8000 miles.

I understand they are starting to become endangered due to the decline of the mud flats in the Yellow Sea.

At the intersection of nowhere and way out there, lies a sleazy abandoned bar. My dad waited in the truck while I ran around thrilled at the prospect of taking this dreadful looking place and making it speak to me. Imagine the thousands of wild scenes and evenings of debauchery...just imagine.

More to come.

Recipe to follow...you can make these as bars or drop cookies, your choice.

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup raw sugar

1/4 cup tofu

1/4 cup crushed peanuts

Mix everything together - drop by spoon fulls opn parchment lined cookie sheet or spread in a parchment lined pan. Dust with cocoa nibs. Bake 20-30 minutes at 350 F. Try adding chocolate chips instead of peanuts if you like.

I was there early, thus the lack of patrons.

What more could you want in your house......

we spent about an hour chatting, and I never did learn the names of this couple :)

This was a really long day. I had an 8AM coaching, 9AM class, 12PM concert, then I had to run home, get my car, drop my cello off across town, rush back to my place, pack, and then go to the airport. So when I got to the airport I went here.

Located in Waterloo, Buddha Bar combines comfy, incense-fuelled bar areas with a swathe of tables serving pricey Pan-Asian fare.

In Canterbury at a bar on Burgate Street. Bewitching light coming on through the blinds and 5 green bottles in staggered view.

A walk around the Bar Walls is a favourite short walk of ours, the views can be spectacular and there is always something new to see. The bonus of being separated from traffic is a definite bonus.

After a day in the giddy heat of Oz, what better than a bar serving cool craft beer. But those bar flies get everywhere!!

Vesterbro, Copenhagen

June 2010

My wife and I walked past this gritty dive bar in the decidely rough around the edges neighborhood of Vesterbro in Copenhagen, and I loved it for its authentic vintage ethic. When I peeked in I noticed right away how much it reminded me of a setting for a scene out of a David Lynch film. Later that evening I returned for a few beers and to be a fly on the wall, this photo and the others in this series are from that experience. These guys were playing a dice game and it would appear discussing something important. The guy on the left looked very serious.
