upper left is the LED bargraph (for debugging and cool factor). upper right is the pair of i2c connectors (one input and one feed-thru for daisy chaining). bottom right is the pcf8574 PE chip. far right is the 3x3 pin array for selecting the 3 bits (a0,a1,a2) of the PE chip.

 

6 bits on the PE chip are mapped to 3 chip-selects, a clock and a data line. this allows each of the 3 PGA2311 chips to be accessed with their own CE line (or logic OR them to talk to them all; like a broadcast).

 

building this by hand took about half a day. I like to take my time and have a neat layout, both on top of the board and below.

We have seen that we can group transitions by the gap size required to make the transition. When we plot the gap groups in order of gap size we see that the frequency of gaps decreases with the increase in gap size. This pattern is distorted by the AA and BB groups, which occur in multiples of six, and which are significantly more frequent than the other groups but then continue with a sharper decline as the gap size increases.

 

The fact that the frequency decreases as the gap size increases, should mean that the transitions within the first few smaller gap groups should occur more frequently. This would be true if it was not for the distortion of the AA and BB groups and a difference between the repeat cycle of the transition group and the gap groups. There are five transition groups which repeat themselves over an interval of 10 while the gap groups repeat themselves over an interval of 6. The transitions within gap group 2 benefit from being first and also the increase when they appear into gap group 12, making these transitions the most frequent. However the transitions in gap group 4 have to wait until they appear again in gap group 24 before they have the same benefit, by which time the advantage is much reduced. The transitions in gap group 6 have the obvious advantage of being in gap group 6 but gradually lose this advantage and only have slight boost when they come into gap group 36 but by then the frequency is relatively low. Ironically, if it wasn’t for the distortion caused by the AA and BB groups, the transitions group 10 may well be slightly more frequent than the other transition groups and Kannan Soundararajan and Robert Lemke Oliver would have been writing something very different in their paper about the apparent bias in consecutive Prime’s last digit.

 

We will explore this graph in a bit more detail as there are some interesting observations to be made…

arduino based relay (stereo) volume control. each bit is assigned a 'stage' in the attenuator, each one being half the previous so that the binary 0, 1 stuff all works out ;)

 

those are latching relays and they need extra complexity to support them (one voltage latches one way, reverse the voltage and it latches the other way). the thing you have to remember is to REMOVE voltage after 50ms or so.

 

there is a bargraph led chip for debug use, so I can spy on the bus ;)

In the previously post we placed the gap size groups in order of size and ended up with a rather jumbled graph, but within this graph there are some interesting observations to be made:

 

The percentage for each transitions are more or less evenly distributed within each gap size. This ratio does not appear to be affected by how frequent the gap size is or whether there are three or four transitions per gap size.

 

The repeat cycle for the transition groups is 10 while for the gap size groups it is 6. This gives an overall repeat cycle for the transitions and gap sizes of 30, for example transition size 2 will match again with the AB group (purple) when the gap size is 32.

 

Despite the irregular appearance of the graph, caused mainly by the distortion of the AA and BB groups (green), if we use the repeat cycle of 30 we will see a pattern. Although it is difficult to see at first, if we bring each interval of 30 to the same scale, we see that the ratio remains consistent for each of the gap size and transition size groups. There are some variations and inconsistencies, but there is an overall pattern, suggesting that the frequencies of Prime gaps and transitions follows a fractal pattern.

Television, tight pants, tube lighting, and sporty cars....America has finally become what America has wanted to become all its life.

I’ve been experimenting the with the Neurosky Mindwave mobile EEG headset to send my attention and meditation brainwave data to an Arduino for visualising, by pairing it with a Bluetooth dongle. In the first clip I'm showing levels of my attention data on a LED bargraph and in the second clip I’m showing both my attention and meditation data levels beside each other on an LED matrix.

I keep missing these things at conventions I've gone to, only to later have people tell me about how cool they were. The company is nyx Illuminated Clothing, but since they don't seem to have a website, and neither does their business card, you can just check out what Gizmag has to say. They were my first intro to these jackets last year. I totally love LEDs. These were all I hoped for and more, too. They were blindingly bright, especially the front panel, which is 16x16 killer-bright orange, while the back is 32x16 red. The panels are flexible - they're not like a block glued to the jacket. There's a button inside the lapel that switches between several modes. One scrolls text horizontally, one is a bouncing bars screen saver, one creates a bargraph VU meter that displays a full-width graph of whatever the jacket hears, which was fun to watch scramble and bounce as he spoke, and the one pictured here does starbursts of random, or possibly Game-of-Life interactions (though it was seriously high-speed, meaning it probably was just some form of random or pre-built output). More info in the next pic.
