Detail of the statue of Cristopher Columbus, discoverer of America, in Barcelona. The statue is placed in Portal de la Pau Square, at the crossroads between the southern end of the Ramblas of Barcelona, Passeig de Colom and Passeig de Josep Carner, in front of the port. The sculptural ensemble, designed by Gaietà Buïgas and inaugurated in 1888 on the occasion of that year’s Universal Exposition in the city, was attended by a big number of artists, including the sculptor Josep Llimona. The bronze statue of Columbus is the work of Rafael Atché, and the four lions at the base were sculpted by Agapit Vallmitjana with the same material. The photograph is taken from Miramar. Behind the complex, which is 60 meters high, there is Barceloneta, and, in the background, the tallest buildings of Diagonal Mar and the three characteristic chimneys of Sant Adrià de Besòs power plant, 90 meters high.

The National Palace, headquarters of MNAC (National Art Museum of Catalonia) is the work of Eugenio Cendoya and Enric Catà, under the supervision of Pere Domènech i Roura, son of the modernist architect Lluís Domènec i Montaner. It was built between 1926 and 1929 as the main venue for the 1929 Universal Exposition. In the Oval Room, King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia presided over the inauguration ceremony.
