August 2010 - in the cabin at AM Radio's build, The Quiet: Further Away and Farther Apart
The autumn equinox is still more than a month away..and August is only half way through, filling its nights now with the Perseid showers, and the persistent sound of the cicadas and crickets...and yet already the sun has slid back around from its furthest northwest trajectory of summer, and now casts longer shadows in late afternoon. The goldenrod, in all its beautiful variations, blooms in great sweeps of gold and yellow, bringing spots of light to those earlier evenings. Even as we go about our summer activities, the earliest migrant birds, unseen by many of us, have begun to gather around us, arriving from up north to rest and replenish themselves before moving further south. Some have already left.
The dashing flight and loud hum of the hummingbirds, as they fight their territorial battles, and add such life to the view just outside a window, will all be gone by the first week of September in the northeast of the US, heading out on their long migratory journey of thousands of miles, crossing the Gulf of Mexico to get to Central America where they will spend the winter.
The beauty of autumn will be on us soon enough, although carrying the portend of the long, cold months of winter. The seasons seem to move so quickly. Remember to pause for a moment..and look at all the beauty that is around you.
"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in."
~John Muir, 1913
