October 2011 - This picture of AM Radio was taken back in March of this year at his build - The Ferry

It was about a month ago that 5 extraordinary sims built by AM Radio..The Quiet:Further Away and Further Apart, The Ferry, Surface, Superdyne, and A Little Further Than Before... quietly left SL. Now all that remains in SL of AM's work is his very first public build..The Far Away.. which opened in the fall of 2007. Of course, everyone had been given very generous notice by AM back in April that in 6 months time this would be happening, but I think we all wanted to believe that it would never happen, even if we suspected that it seemed likely. I think really we couldn't imagine it happening.

AM is one of the great artists in SL, a creator of extraordinarily beautiful and very unique sims. His builds have such an enduring feel to them, that I think it was just hard to imagine that almost all of his sims would actually all disappear at once from SL. It just seemed an impossible thought. Even though these things happen all the time in SL, and now at an even more rapid rate because of the land prices being unsustainable for many.

His builds are wonderfully immersive in a way that many are not. Those who came to love spending time in them, alone or with friends, who continued to return to them over and over again, who introduced new people to them as some of the best places that could be found in SL, who were inspired by them...were so drawn to them, I think, because when in them they felt like such real places, resonating with something deeper and more permanent. His builds all have a haunting enduring beauty to them with their illusion of being such large spaces with great far-reaching horizons, combined with the intimacy, warmth and feeling of refuge in the cabins, and all the many fine, interesting, and sometimes surreal details that he puts into his builds that make them so special, unique, and unforgettable. AM is a wonderfully talented, and sensitive artist and poet in RL, and he brings all of that into his creations in SL. His builds are moving on a deeper level because he has poured so much of himself into them. We can feel that. We sense something deeply personal interwoven into these builds. It is what pulls us in, and it is very moving and inspiring to be around.

We all can be very grateful to Mencius Watts, and IDIA Labs, an exhibition sim for virtual art in SL, which is a part of The Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts at the Center for Media Design at Ball State University, for graciously hosting and supporting the work of AM Radio for the last 2-1/2 years. He was the first artist-in residence to be hosted at IDIA Labs, and we can all be very thankful to them that they did, and for so long.

AM and I are very good friends, and I know he knows my feelings about the loss of his sims, and how much I admire him, and what he has created in SL. I had pretty much made his build...The Ferry...my home, since it incorporated one of my most favorite past builds of his..Husk..a place of unbelievable beauty and peace. I have such a longing at times to be back there. I have felt a terrible loss and sadness that these builds are no longer in SL, and it has taken me awhile to even be able to write about it. It truly is a huge loss for the residents of SL. I know these builds will never be forgotten. They will forever remain in some nostalgic memory as very special places that really existed, because that is what they felt like when you were in them.

AM....I just want to thank you so much for all the beauty and inspiration you have brought to so many of us. You have left a very indelible mark on SL, and on all of those who have been touched, and moved by the beauty you have created in there, and that continues with the presence of The Far Away still remaining in SL. Your contribution to the world of SL has made, and continues to make, such a huge difference in the perception people have of this virtual world by what you have created and shared with us. I am not sure how long I would have stayed around in SL, if I hadn't discovered The Far Away almost four years ago this coming month. It made all the difference for me.

Thank you for your friendship, and sharing so much of yourself. You inspire me every day.

And for those of you who may wander onto this site, and have never seen a build by AM Radio, then be sure to visit The Far Away. All the beauty, and wonderfully poignant elements that AM puts into all his builds you will find in that build also. It should not be missed.

"I'm reminded every day of my life, if not by events then by my wife, that I am not a perfect man. I will not be a perfect president... [woman in audience: "you'll be a better one!]

But here's what I can promise you. I can promise you this: I will always tell you what I think. I will always tell you where I stand. I will be honest with you about the challenges that we face as a nation.

I will listen to you even when we disagree. And we're going to disagree sometimes... It is a big, complicated country -- we're going to disagree sometimes.

But we can disagree without being disagreeable. We can focus on what we have in common, and do good work together."
