Ball Python giving my friends brother a big ol hug

Isn't he the cutest thing you ever saw???

Apophis laying on a pillow seemingly content. A short time ago the NRM had the Great Gathering and had six of Sir Nigel Gresley's A4 locomotives (including Mallard, which still has the steam locomotive speed record) all in one place. Two have now left but four still remain.

Just a baby, 16 inches long.

Even got Mom to hold it--for a VERY brief moment!

Hot glued a bunch of Pete Moss to the background.

This tragedy occurred when a live rat was left unsupervised with a ball python overnight. The snake had to be euthanized as the wounds were too severe and extensive. Please do not leave live prey with your snake without supervision.

He's the newest addition to our house. My son has wanted a pet snake since he was 4 years old. Now that he's 8, he has one.

We interrupt the Prefuse 73 picture series to introduce the newest member of the apartment: a so-far-unnamed ball python bought by my roommate this weekend. He bought a female as well, but this guy seemed to like me better. They're the first reptiles we've had so far. Bring on the name suggestions!

The ball python is slithering on its perch.

Padawan started shedding for the first time since I bought him.

I was getting annoyed with the crappy macro my camera has - which surprises me every time - and it managed to catch this but the focus is at a terrible spot.

You can almost hear him think.

anyone who knows me remotely well knows that I have a HUGE phobia of snakes. I am terrified. when I'm surprised by one I'm usually so startled that I immediately start struggling to breathe, I panic, I cry, I basically really freak out.

I knew that Dusty owned a snake, but they failed to mention they were bringing her along for the shoot. I didn't notice her (the snake... Ophelia) curled up in Dusty's hand until after they had been standing in my living-room for a good 5-10 minutes. Needless to say my reaction was quite the same as it usually is and it took me a bit to gain my composure.

Shaking like a leaf I did my best to pet her as soon as I could to try to get myself used to being around her. I had a hard time concentrating for the first few shots but Dusty and the rest of the Rawhyde guys were very good with her, and didn't tease me about my fear and did the best they could to make me feel comfortable around her.

Somehow, by some unknown miracle, I held Ophelia in my hands... with Dusty coaching me to breathe and open my eyes the whole time, haha... and by the time we were back at my house after the shoot I had him gently place her on my shoulder where she sat for a few minutes as we watched a movie.

I never thought I'd say this, and I still fear most snakes... but Ophelia is an absolute sweetheart.

Some snakes I've owned over the years.
