Well after an incredibly wet, windy and cold start we managed to extract ourselves from the cave and have a go.

Unfortunately the tide was very high so I was in the water doing this.

This is to celebrate 1,000,000 + views on flickr, however what it became was a beautiful coming together of like minded individuals - read nutters!

It was freezing cold, raining and windy yet about 20ish folks braved the weather and a long drive, to be a part of tonight. I truly felt humbled by the turnout and hope you all had some fun and maybe even learnt something. I know I saw this image on the back of many cameras, which made me feel very excited.

Again thank you, and maybe we might hold another night out when the weather is a bit more appealing.

We went to go watch the fireworks today which was a lot of fun, but leaving was hell . The parking Garage was jam packed with cars so we parked and waited. Good thing we brought some stuff with us.

I experimented with some post processing on these, using Nik Color efex 3.0 - Tonal Contrast , not sure if I will use it again.

So for this also the same source of light (different colored mini bulbs) attached with a 2 meter wire and on the other end of wire a 9v battery. In order to make the Ball put something like bottle cap on ground start rotating the wire just above it and also you have to keep moving'evolving around that bottle cap continously while rotating the wire. That will result in making the light trail/painting in shape of a ball. For this image i took 2 exposures and then merged them in PS. One exposure for the light ball and second exposure with same camera settings just to paint the wall with orange colored indicators of my car parked on left side.

Hope you enjoy it :)

I am preparing files for a substantial upcoming exhibition.

I have been trying UNBELIEVABLY hard not to upload any of them, but I couldn't help myself.

This night was insane. I had the entire Linderhof Palace, in Bavaria, to myself for the night. A bit silly really. But this was a highlight for me.

The Ball of Light was confused, but excited. The time was near, yet it did not know what that meant. All it knew was that the energy was strong. Stronger than ever.

Was this the sign the Ball of Light had been waiting for?

Ahhh the Ball of Light. As you can see it was hanging around a bit the other night. I suppose I was lucky that it decided to come quite close.

I love the Ball of Light. I am thinking that it deserves its own website, so we are building it over Christmas. I think that it will be making a lot more appearances in even more crazy places......... at least I hope so.

Hi Flickr, it has been a looooooooong time!

My FB and IG have been locked down. So its back to where it all began for me.

This is an image create last night with some Nanlite t8-7x tubes they sent me to play with. In all honestly, they are pretty sick. An app that works properly etc.

See you soon legends!

On the other side of the water is the tourist town of Destin, Florida which is located in the Panhandle of Florida along "The Emerald Coast" (on the Gulf of Mexico side of Florida). This is where my sons and I stayed the night last night before making our way to Orlando, Florida today. We are going to try to hook up with Duane Schoon in the next few days for another collab with a fantastic Light Painter! :-)

The past few months have been so busy that I have missed the moon incredibly.

This Thursday I am heading out for sure! I feel water could be involved, the Ball of Light is a bit of a water junkie for sure.

I kid you not this has only been cropped.

The Ball of Light™ came to life in Cambodia.

Well we are back. What a trip. What a huge amount of stories. But most of all, what an amazing place. The people of Cambodia are just so incredibly beautiful.

We stayed at a Yoga and Meditation retreat, Hariharalaya Retreat (more on this amazing place to come). This oasis was just a magical sanctuary in our 8 days in Siem Reap.

Fun to come I promise.

I couldn't stop staring at this today.

I couldnt believe how free and alive I felt in a place so remote from noise, people and well pretty much anything really.

The light moon was my friend, the silence my comfort. I could think, feel or say anyhting without fear of well anything really.

I grew at Lake Mungo. I learned that I am so incredibly important to me, yet must realise how insignificant I am to the universe. Therefor it deserves, in fact commands our respect. How can we be so ignorant to think we can behave however we want, with such unreal contempt for nature, to the earth, that is so so old and wise, without being spat out like the tiny little pimples that we are.

The Aboriginal people survived as a fully functioning civilization for ( I now believe) more than 65,000 years. Through ice ages, massive centuries of drought, ice, flooding and desert and yet were still here when the white man came only 200 years ago. They were desimated. Killed, and stolen from there own people. Desimated.

Why could we not learn from them. Why could we not look at how they lived and survived in the most harsh continent on the planet.

Ahhh, the age old questions. This place makes you think. I would encourage anyone who has not been away to a remote place, to go, enjoy and think.

Peace

The last shot before I abandoned the coast on the weekend. I love the Purple Ball of Light. It makes me feel good.

I had so much fun heading out for the first time in ages!

Peace, Denis.

I always have so much fun, as I am sure we all do, looking through old images looking for something a bit different.

I still have heaps of images from Lake Mungo, but have decided to draw a line in the sand with that project as the July shoot is coming up.

I am pretty keen to do the whole interactive thing again. So will need to be getting onto that shortly. It is looking like we will be heading to Kangaroo Island to the Remarkables. The voting is defenitely swinging that way!

The image above is special to me as it makes me think about the beach we lived at for so long. It makes me think about how light and time are layered so deeply. How I love that the light is still there because it is here staring at me now. The layers of time, because I was there, and still can be now just by looking at this. Ah, stop waffling Den.

Have a great weekend, and for those of you up there, have a happy 4th July!

SO this is a toll I created to work underwater. I am standing in about a metre of water waving this thing around like a lunatic splashing it in and out of the water. It was hilarious. While I was doing other stuff I left in under the water to "test" it and ti still worked a few hours later!

Huge Fun.

Cameron and I ventured to a little park tonight that I drive by on my way to and from work every day. We had a great time as usual and met three really nice ladies that were out walking their dogs at the park. I think the dogs wanted in on part of the action! I think we may have to head back there soon and include them in the shots somehow! ;-)

Ever since moving to Australia I have been fascinated with Canola fields. They dont exist in NZ. I have been wanting to get amongst them for the past 2 years, but never got around to it, or missed the timing, and it was over my head.

Last night I managed to find a field that was just right. I didn't want a flat horizon, and didn't want trees or houses. BIG ask, but managed to find this amazing location.

What a night. The moon was different. Or was it the location? The richness of the colours was amazing. I have not touched this photo at all apart from white balance. It was like the moon was raining colour all over me.

Sometimes I love simplicity. So does the Ball of Light.

FOR A BIT OF FUN CHECK OUT THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/

So this was the first night out in Europe. We went to a place called Hallstatt. This is an old, and really petite little place of wonder.

The Ball of Light seemed to be struggling to come out actually. He was probably just a little awestruck! When the Ball of Light did finally make an appearance, it was a bit shaky, and a bit nervous. The view was a bit mind bending for a first night out. It didn't take long though before it was going CRAZY!

Go Hard! (and have fun)

Den

A good start to an inspired, motivated day in the studio is turning off facebook, flickr and all other social media sites. But before I do here is one of my favorite photos ever. Not because it has a Ball of LIght in it, but because it is my go to images when I am feeling uninspired. It fires me up!

Have a massive day people and make some magic!

THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE IS HERE! : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/

I was playing around a bit tonight and found a series that I shot a year ago. Just seems like yesterday!

Hello Flickr. It has been a while.

I am not 100% sure what happened. I think it just became easy to post stuff here from other forms of social. I am a little addicted to the ease of Instagram, and of course the FB poison still runs in my veins. Maybe it is because it is easier to get people from there to my Website.

BUT, I think we need to get to know each other again. I really miss the community here. I mean I really miss it. Such a tight group of light painters. You guys, and girls, rock!

The biggest problem with posting stuff from IG to here is, obviously, it is square cropped and some of the work I have been doing recently is just beastly wider.

So, I am going to try hard to get my shit together here on Flickr again. I just hop my frustration at the outrageously slow interface does not overcome me.

Lets ROCK THIS PARTY!

A quickie before bed!

Thanks LED LEnser for the amazing D14.2, these are bring my Liquid Light to life!

Peace, Denis

More mid-exposure tripod and lens swapping shenanigans shot in one photographic exposure in a tunnel under Nottinghamshire. It's great when you realise that Denis Smith's Ball of Light tool is exactly the right diameter to allow me to fit a person inside!

You may know that I am an international LED LENSER Ambassador. This is because I believe in the product. And I thrash the gear, hard!

My Local team at Led Lenser Australia listened to a crazy idea I had and jumped to help me realise it. My good mate Gavin has developed a light painting tool that is soon to be unleashed on you all. It is called a Light Flute, and there are 2 of them in this image. Wait till you see these things, heads will pop, I promise.

This is purely a test shot, but is a single exposure with no compositing or editing other than the basics. It is at about 9.30pm and the water was like a bath it was so warm.

I would normally hold back until I had some seriously developed images to share, but there you go. I am planning on spending a lot of time in the water this summer, and lighting up that liquid goodness!I am a little excited about this project.

There are two LED Lenser D14.2's in this image. These things are freakin amazing!

Go out and try something new.

Peace, Denis

THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE IS HERE! : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/

The Ball of Light has a natural attraction to the Grange Jetty here in Adelaide. The only problem is that it has to always get in the water and play around.

But in the water, in this case a couple of feet, it gets a bit wobbly! Never mind, the Ball of Light had a fun night out and that is all that matters!

Easter is coming up, be safe in your travels, and have some fun!

Why Exhibit?

My current exhibition will be finishing this week at Port Adelaide. I have done several sizable exhibitions now and love it. But, why? It certainly isn't to make a mountain of money. I have sold enough prints to cover my costs, just, and it has taken a huge amount of time. My amazing wife Kyrie has also spent a lot of time on the exhibition as she does all of them.

Here are the reasons why exhibiting is really beneficial to me. Firstly and most importantly I get to spread the word about light painting. It is still such a fledgling form of photography. A huge percentage of people who come through have never seen it before, so they gate to understand in detail what it is and how beautiful it can be.

When I am at the exhibition, which I try to as much as possible, I get to talk to people about my work. A huge amount of local light painting enthusiasts who follow my work come along ad we got to talk about my work, and that is great. I love sharing tips and advice. To be honest this is bloody tiring though. Each day I was there I came home wrecked! But damn it is rewarding.

Selling prints at exhibition is also a great way to gauge what people like enough to part with their hard earned money for. This always blows me away. Kyrie is generally has the final say on what hangs and what goes home, and she is generally pretty accurate with what will and won't sell. Although there is always a surprise or two.

On the whole having a Ball of Light exhibition is a rewarding experience.

The best advice I can give to someone thinking about exhibitions is this. DO NOT go into it with any expectations. I have had exhibitions before where promises were made by galleries that were simply untrue, and I have had exhibitions where I have lost significant amounts of money. I now go into these things with very few expectations, and then I am generally not disappointed it is isn't a hit. And if it is a success, which this current one was, I am delightfully surprised.

Oh, and this image was a hit. It looks stunning in the flesh, simply stunning!

I loved this night out. I enjoyed the simplicity of it all.

I am looking forward to the next full moon.

I am looking forward to everything really.
