What amazing light I saw this evening as we finished up work for the day and off I went to walk about and take in the sights. Couple of Dutch Botters sitting in the harbor caught my eye. One of those images that I can't decide between B&W or Color, happening a bit more lately.

Pinguïns zijn vogels. Typische vogelkenmerken zoals veren als lichaamsbedekking en een tandeloze snavel laten dat duidelijk zien. Door aanpassing aan het leven in het water kunnen ze al sinds miljoenen jaren niet meer vliegen. Zwartvoetpinguïns zijn de enige van de ongeveer 20 soorten pinguïns die rond de kustwateren van Zuid-Afrika leven.
Zwartvoetpinguïns kennen een jarenlange paarband. Bij het baltsgedrag staan de partners dicht bij elkaar en buigen en strekken zich. Daarbij laten ze hun harde roep horen die aan het balken van een ezel doet denken.
Van de 1800-locs van RFO in Locon-kleurstelling zijn er nog maar twee over. Dit maakt ze alweer bijna bijzonder. Op deze foto RFO 1837 die op 26 maart 2022 met een GATX-ketelwagentrein op weg is naar Bad Bentheim. Passage langs Barneveld Aansluiting. Blijkbaar heeft iemand bij wijze van grap met een schone lap een schuine balk op de neus aangebracht, wat mijns inziens zou moeten verwijzen naar de rode NS Cargo kleurstelling met witte balk die deze loc als 1637 destijds als enige gehad heeft.

Zur Geschichte der Bockwindmühle Wettmar
Im 17. Jh. gab es 8 Windmühlen in der Vogtei Burgwedel
Ende 19. Jh. zusammen mit der Gemeinde Isernhagen 24 Windmühlen
1585 wurde die Bockwindmühle erstmalig urkundlich erwähnt
der Standort lag auf dem Nordberg in Wettmar
der "Hausbaum" der Mühle wurde 1584 gefällt, das Alter des Baumes betrug zur Zeit der Fällung ca. 200 Jahre, insgesamt ist er 630 Jahre alt
1794 ist eine Erneuerung der Mühle dokumentiert: Inschrift am "Hammer"
1861 wurde eine weitere Renovierung durchgeführt: Jahreszahl als Inschrift an einem Balken im Innern der Mühle, jetzt sichtbar außen an einer Kreuzschwelle
Betrieb der Mühle ist durchgängi bis ins 20. Jh. nachgewiesen
1905 erfolgte der Bau eines Müllerhauses und Erweiterung mit einem Verbrennungsmotor zum Einsatz bei Windmangel; zwei Segelflügel wurden durch Jalousieflügel ersetzt
ab 1940 wurde sie nicht mehr gewerblich genutzt
1947 fand ein Umbau zur Jagdhütte statt mit teilw. Ausbau der Mühlentechnik

Hier trotseer ik de evenwichtsbalk hoog boven een wild kolkende rivier -en toch blijven lachen!- terwijl ik wijs naar de bollenvelden aan de horizon in de Noordoostpolder.
In de middag werd afgereisd naar Ennepetal, waar DB Cargo tweemaal daags vanuit Hagen-Vorhalle diverse bedrijven in Ennepetal bediend. Deze spoorlijn loopt dwars door de stad heen, wat hem zeer fotogeniek maakt.
DB Cargo 294 794 met 4 Eanos en 3 rongenwagens, beladen met stalen balken, onderweg van Hagen-Vorhalle naar Ennepetal-Altenvoerde, rijdt stapvoets door de Kölner Strasse in Ennepeptal.

Balk (Friesland) - NL, juli 2021
Balk is ontstaan bij een eenvoudige balkbrug over de Luts, vandaar de plaatsnaam. Later werd deze houten balkbrug vervangen. De plaats komt in 1491 voor het eerst voor als Balc. Aanvankelijk hoorde Balk bij Harich.
In 1585 werd Balk door Spaanse soldaten uit Groningen geplunderd. Het werd in de 18e eeuw welvarend door de boterhandel, en in de 19e eeuw was het een zelfstandig dorp geworden.

Das Nest an Balken, Wänden oder Mauervorsprüngen besteht aus lehmiger Erdmasse, die mit Speichel durchsetzt und mit Grashalmen oder Haaren verstärkt wird.
Die Tatsache, dass sie früher auch an offenen Kaminen oder Rauchfängen brütete, trug ihr ihren Namen ein.

Rotterdam Rail Feeding 189 099, in DistriRail totaalbestickering (nog zonder rode balk dat kwam een jaar later), met containertrein van Waalhaven-Zuid naar Rheinhausen, door werkzaamheden bij Oberhausen omgeleid via Venlo.
Tegenwoordig wordt de shuttle door Lineas gerden, maar is door de saaie vloot van Lineas niet meer de moeite waard om te fotografen.

The history of Balk begins somewhere around the year 1300. The name refers to a bridge over the river Luts, which was actually not much more than a beam at that time. In any case, people settled around this beam, which connected both banks of the Luts. The great period of growth, which makes Balk a beautiful monumental village, was between the fifteenth and eighteenth century with the production of dairy. The butter trade in particular brought about a great economic boost.

I was visiting the Big Island of Hawaii with some friends and family, and my brother convinced the group to take a lava tour by boat. I always kind of balk a little bit at overtly touristy stuff like that, but I think everyone was a pretty shocked when we got our first look at the Kalapana Lava Flow after about a half hour boat trip down the coast. It’s such an awesome, phantasmagorical sight and, since they actually get surprisingly close to the spots where the rivers of lava meet the ocean and throw up sulfurous steam clouds, also a pretty visceral sensory experience.

Aarebrücke Arch ist eine Strassenbrücke, Stabbogenbrücke (Langerscher Balken) und Stahlbrücke, erbaut von 1994 bis 1997.
In der Kirchgasse der Beeskower Altstadt befindet sich das älteste Haus der östlichen Mark Brandenburg. Durch einen Stadtbrand im Jahr 1513 wurde das Nebengebäude teilweise zerstört. Von noch erhaltenen Balken konnte man diesen Teil des Hauses rekonstruieren. Bis 1995 wurde das historische Fachwerkhaus denkmalgerecht saniert und ist von außen zu besichtigen. Spring 2016 I spotted two great egrets at Brick Pond at the same time. Such an undocumented experience that eBird balked and required proof (which I provided in a photo). So imagine my surprise when I began hearing from my friend Bill Baburchak that as many of six or more have been seen since late July. From his visits he'd found they spend quality time there in the mornings. Yesterday, during my sunrise stint in the blind, I first spotted one egret far across the water. Then two. They eventually moved closer to a log in what seems to be prime hunting real estate in the center of the pond. There they remained for the duration of my stay. During that time they were joined by at least three others. Five great egrets in early August. Migration patterns are changing. The climate is changing. Sawdon Balk is a Public Bridleway that links the villages of Sawdon and Rushton in North Yorkshire.This is a view South across Seamer Ings and on towards the Yorkshire Wolds or it would be as we were under a blanket of low cloud for much of the day.A very typical Bank Holiday,but hey it sure beats work and it didn't stop me from being out and about.

DB Cargo-loc 189 822 is in de avond van 13 juli 2020 met een met Landrovers beladen autotrein onderweg richting Aachen (D) en passeert hier vlak achter station Mönchengladbach Wickrath (D). Deze loc is samen met de 189 823 onlangs teruggekeerd uit Italië, waar beide locs ook voor DB Cargo hebben gereden. Beide machines hebben hier ook hun witte kleurstelling ingeruild voor de rode DB-kleur, waarbij alleen de standaard DB-balk op de neuzen is aangebracht.

Hardly the best quality image I've ever uploaded, but I've persevered with it and figured it was worth sharing for interest value alone.
It features a pair of Woodhead class 76s, units 76032 and 76031, heading down the valley toward Wath-upon-Dearne with a rake of empty MGR wagons from Fiddlers Ferry Power Station.
On the hill in the background lies Wombwell and to the left of the locos is Mitchell Main Signal Box, which controlled the crossing barriers on Bradberry Balk Lane.
As can be seen by the span of the catenary gantries, the railway system in these parts was once more extensive, at least regards sidings and loops. Coal was still King too when I took the shot (there were many mines hereabouts), but the output was nowhere near as prolific as it had been perhaps 20 - 30 years earlier.
Today the railway has disappeared and the trackbed, once resonating to the passage of countless coal trains, is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Climb on your bike here and you can ride across the Pennines on the closed section of the old Woodhead route - well, with the exception of the tunnel itself that is.
The surroundings have significantly changed too - the empty fields beyond the train are now part of an industrial and retail park, and the area bisected by a bypass named Mitchells Way.
Rather like the coal industry in these parts, this is a bit of South Yorkshire's history that's gone for good.
NB. My notes tell me that 76031 used to be 76044 - I don't know the story behind that but maybe it was renumbered when fitted for multiple working.
