Balanced Rock, one of the most iconic features in the park, stands a staggering 128 feet (39m) tall. While this formation may appear to be an epic balancing act, it’s actually not balanced at all. The slick rock boulder of Entrada Sandstone sits attached to its eroding pedestal of Dewey Bridge mudstone. The exposure of these two rock strata layers are ideal for the formation of arches and balanced rocks.

May 7, pitch black night at 4 am with 18.5% waning crescent to show up in about 2.5 hours. No light painting is allowed in Arches National park so I enjoyed the beauty of the Balanced Rock as presented by mother nature against the one and only Way. I was amused to see that the core was starting just above the light supplied by taxpayers in Moab. A few clouds were keeping me company, shooting stars just passing by in a hurry to catch the burn.
Nice and warm, plenty of time for a pano but also for admiring the core of the Milky Way

I'm not an expert and I can't identify this bird.
It seems to me quite young: I hope he would like to live in my area, so I can catch him a lot of times with my camera
Balanced Rock and other nearby formations in Arches National Park. If you are not familiar with the size of these rock features, look for the people on the trail on the left and right for scale. Balanced Rock is 128 feet high.

The half way stop for heading back to Texas from Wyoming is Colorado Springs, which is a good spot to catch a sunset and sunrise if a nice one happens. The weather was just right for a sunrise on the return trip, so I headed up to Garden of the Gods to photograph balanced rock and and enjoy the morning before heading home. This is not an image constructed in Photoshop. My son-in-law likes building this kind of tricky balanced stone structures, so he built this one on our hike in Algonquin provincial park.

Unlikely. Ephemeral. Precarious. Balanced. How did this come to be? It was less than a foot tall, but it stopped me in my tracks.
I saw this little formation on a hike to see the lemniscate (previous post) and was immediately reminded of my paternal grandfather Sidney Mitton and his love of spinning tops. As a youngster, he became proficient with "throwing tops" and even participated in competitions. I remember him showing me how to wind the string around the top and throw it so it landed properly, spinning. He gave me several of his tops when I was a youngster.
I spotted this interesting scene while driving down from my hometown Schuders to the neighboring town of Schiers, located in the Swiss Alps.
I processed a balanced, a photographic, and a paintery HDR photo from two RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Balanced Rock Falls, a waterfall which has carved its way below a seemingly precariously placed boulder. The falls are located within the boundaries of the Buffalo National River, in the Ozark Mountains of northern Arkansas.
One of the iconic rock formations in Arches National Park stands 128 feet tall. The remains of another similar rock formation which fell in 1975 can be seen on the right.

Balanced - A young Bobcat rests against the mustard flowers. I thought the yellows balanced the greens in the background nicely. Always nice when things work out like that in nature!

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area - Lee's Ferry, Arizona.
A big boulder rolled down from the nearby cliff to a stop on this pedestal made of softer rock. Since the pedestal is eroding away at a faster pace, the boulder will topple again before it, too, will be broken down by weathering.

On a recent trip to Wyoming I was lucky enough to come across this beautiful bird. It was an awesome experience watching it take off and land in this meadow. Checking with a biologist that just did a recent owl study, I was informed that this is a Great Gray Owl and it is very rare to see one in the wild. So I consider myself very lucky to get the shots I did. I took well over a 100 shots of the bird.

The Great Gray Owl is designated a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Wyoming due to limited and vulnerable habitat. In 2013, we initiated a multi-year study on Great Gray Owls in western Wyoming to understand seasonal habitat use, determine prey use, and develop habitat selection models for predicting seasonal habitats in western Wyoming.
