The origins of baklava has Greeks and Turks at each other's throats.
It is said that ancient Greek seamen and merchants traveling to Mesopotamia discovered the delights of baklava, brought the recipe back to Greece and modified it slightly.
Whatever the historical controversies, the fact remains that baklava is a delicious traditional dessert made of layers of crispy golden phyllo, filled with chopped nuts and garnished with lemon scented syrup or honey… Just heaven!

Baklava- a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. It is characteristic of the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire and much of Central and Southwest Asia.
Baklava cupcake just having been filled with a warm cinnamon honey syrup and walnuts. Later to be frosted with vanilla buttercream.
A popular baklava shop in the Spice Bazaar in Istanbul. It is a well loved Ottoman era desert formed from thin layers of filo dough separated by butter or oil with layers of pistachios, walnuts or almonds, all soaked in honey or syrup with rose water or orange flavours. Different varieties of baklava are popular throughout the Middle East and its origins are lost in history but are said to date back as far as the Assyrian empire, 3000 years ago. I find it too sweet to eat in anything but tiny pieces.

After a talk on Southwest Asia last Friday, the conveyors gave me a gift of homemade baklava, my favourite dessert from the region. It is really delicious.
