Backpacker's Hostel, a very old building that always looks as if it's falling apart.
25 Feb: I found out from a friend of mine that it used to be called the infamous Hotel Spadina. No wonder it looks so seedy. I looked up its history. It was built in late 1873 and had many names and owners. From 1917-1997 it was Hotel Spadina. It was foreclosed in 1917.
In the 1960s and 1970s it was a centre of the Queen Street West music scene, and saw such visitors as Leonard Cohen and the Rolling Stones. On the second level the Cabana Room (where my friend used to perform) was a central venue to the strip. The Jack Nicholson film The Last Detail was also partially filmed at the hotel.
One Toronto newspaper reported that Ernest Hemingway, who was a reporter for the Toronto Star before he became a famous writer, used to stay there. They reported that Leonard Cohen, the Tragically Hip, used to perform there. According to the BC Music Review, it was one of the venues of Toronto's punk scene. It became Global Village Backpackers (a Youth Hostel) in 1997. The Hostel has 190 rooms (Four to a room).

Most of the hikers on this trail were backpackers. These folks told me that if I made money on this pic I would have to share the profits with them. I don't think we're in any danger of that.

When we go camping in my truck I bring all sorts of gear. Large cooktops, pots/pans, chef knife, iced coolers packed with beer ect. Grilled meats with slowly reduced sauces and sauteed veggies are usually on the menu. But when backpacking, this is usually what our lunch consists of.....and ya know what....I think I prefer it :)
