Kids have lots of stuff -- action figures, toys, games, books, pencils, crayons, and snacks -- that they like to carry around with them. Kids need Monsters to take care of them and their little stuff (so you can focus on the big stuff).

here's a few highlights from our 4 day backpacking trip into the Mt Jefferson Wilderness. The 5 mile hike into Carl Lake is lined with wild huckleberries and views of Mt. Jefferson.
From our base camp, we hiked the PCT and other trails with swimmable lakes. A true wilderness experience with only a few other campers.
The trailhead is accessed from the Jack Creek Trailhead off of Hwy 22, between Suttle Lake and Sisters (12 miles). It's about a 3 hour drive from Portland with about 5 miles of gravel.

It just turns out the last time I was in the Great Gulf in summer conditions it was also during a massive flood. So I really don't remember a lot about the Gulf, other than the fact that my dog almost drown 2 separate times after being swept away by rushing water.The second time he was caught in a strainer by his pack, and I had to jump in and free him.
The next memory was that the Sphynx trail is basically a dry creek bed, of extreme steepness. The type of creek you'd hike into to take photos of waterfalls, unfortunately it was my trail that weekend. I can tell you, in low 60s in early June in NH it's not pleasant climbing up waterfalls, all the time knowing when you get to the top, you only have to hike in potentially hurricane force winds along the ridge! And no doubt we did!
I definitely hiked past this section years ago, but for the life of me I cannot remember it. So when a group came by stressing the slip and die nature of it, I was certain they were on a different trail. Afterall there are few signs in the Great Gulf, and the trails are sparsely blazed. In conditions like this you might easily turn up a creek bed assuming it's a trail!
Nonetheless, these guys were a bit over the top. Yeah, it would have been bad to fall here, but it's not sheer (more like 40 degrees), and if you were that worried the trees were to the side of the trail. Just bushwhack through!
What I have learned is two things 1) Winter is a far better time to visit the Great Gulf if you have the time to keeping in mind the short days and potentially to need to break trail 2) NEVER EVER EVER go to the Great Gulf in a period of rain.
This area is the drainage for the entire Presidential cirque and while the river is absolutely beautiful, it's difficult and dangerous to cross, and the area is extremely wet with limited camping options. The existing primitive sites are very compacted and don't drain at all.
My recommendation is bring a hammock. Trees are not in short supply but flat dry ground for a tent is.

This backpack has the look of a drawstring backpack but without the drawstring. There are no zippers to deal with but items still remain secure with front snap closure. The backpack can be expanded by undoing the side snaps. How cool is that!

Artwork Name: Smoking’ Backpacks
Smokin’ Backpacks is simple photographic collage made using twenty-one different photographs that depict a girl smoking two cigarettes with a yellow Kånken backpack which underlines the fact that sometimes behind the trends that society creates there are marvellous aspects which no one is actually aware of.
The subject of this photograph is not the girl because it is not what stands out in the context but the yellow backpack that immediately captures the viewers eye. When taking this picture I payed particular attention to two different details with which I tried to argument my thesis, the yellow backpack and the cigarettes on both sides. Both of these two elements symbolise an aspect of the society. The yellow Kånken backpack is produced by a Norwegian brand called Fjallraven, which is a brand that is really involved in global issues. As a matter of fact it uses a great part of the earnings it makes with the backpack to improve the living conditions of people of the third world countries and the conditions of the environment we live in. The brand basically helps improve the planet we live in but very few people who buy the backpack know it. This takes us back to the second symbol the cigarettes. The girl is is depicted with two cigarettes to show how strongly the trends of society can influence the masses. Smoking is seen as a cool thing by many people and that is why over time it became a trend and people do it without really knowing why. This is what happens with the backpacks, because the people become blindly clouded by the trends the society creates that they don’t really understand the meaning the things have, they only see the meaning the society gives them.
