This is the 'dull background' I was talking about before.

And- no- the idea is not to make a checker board pattern; it is just loosely drawn, to leave a two color ground for what comes next.* The checkerboard will disappear.**

I like the white ground, so i used the traditional priming paint for oil: "flake white", or white lead. ***

I love the double-weave canvas and the tone that the rabbit skin glue gives it, so I want access to that surface and color, as well, in the oil painting that comes next.

* - already tried this on the small one. Worked fine, as far as it went.

- that's the 1990 painting on the wall. it's here because Kaylah moved to temporary housing and doesn't have room. I'm glad to have it for awhile. ( I'm surprised she wants it up in her house. it is so harsh.
