Some background information:
The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is a widespread freshwater fish of eutrophic waters in lakes and large rivers in Europe and Asia. The wild populations are considered vulnerable to extinction, but carps have also been domesticated and introduced into environments worldwide. They are often considered a very destructive breed, being included in the list of the world's 100 worst invasive species.
The mirror carp is a type of carp, commonly found throughout Europe. Its name originates from its scales' resemblance to mirrors. The difference between mirror and common carp is both genetic and visual. Biologically they are similar. Common carp have an even, regular scale pattern, whereas mirror carp have an irregular and patchy scaling, making many fish unique and easily identifiable just by sight. The lack of scales is widely believed to have been bred in by monks in order to make the fish easier to prepare for the table.
The average length of mirror carp is 35 to 50 cm with a weight of 2 to 3 kgs. But large specimen can even have a length of 140 cm and a weight of 50 kgs. I guess that the mirror carp on my picture has a stately size of approximately 80 cm, perhaps weighing around 10 kg at the same time.
In Franconia carp is the favourite food of many people and therefore something like a national dish. We usually eat it either “blue” (cooked in a stock of vinegar, root vegetables, onions and spices like juniper berries) or fried (with a coating of flour and eggs). A special modification of fried carp is so-called pepper carp. To cook such a pepper carp simply lots of pepper are added to the coating. Therefore it’s no surprise that a pepper carp usually tastes very peppery.
As carp is sometimes rumoured to taste rather mouldy if killed and cooked right after having been fished, they are often kept alive in clear water for three days before they are killed. The occasionally mouldy taste originates from the carps’ habit to rummage around the mud on the ground with its mouth, always in search of worms, water snails, mussels and small crawfishes, which they could eat.
The Rothsee is an artificial reservoir, which belongs to the so called Franconian Lakeland. The other lakes of the Frankonian Lakeland are the Huge Brombachsee, the Little Brombachsee, the Igelsbachsee, the Altmuehlsee, the Hahnenkammsee and the Dennenloher See. All in all these seven lakes amount to a water surface of about 20 square kilometres.
Just like most of the other lakes the Rothsee mainly serves the water regulation, but because of its great recreation offer it's also a favoured recreational area for the residents of the city of Nuernberg as well as a popular tourist destination for holidaymakers from farer away.
The Rothsee is 2.2 square kilometres large, thus one of the smaller lakes. It’s divided into an economic part and a swimming area. Three recreational areas are available at all times. In most parts surfing and sailing is possible, but there’s also a widespread nature reserve, which is situated in the northwestern corner of the lake and where all kinds of water sports activities are taboo.
