Mt. San Antonio (10,064' elev) with heavy snow forms a backdrop to Joshua trees and other high desert vegetation. March and April rains have brought out new green growth in the high desert and left snow on the mountains in Southern California. Photo taken morning of April 16th using a Canon PowerShot SX20, polarizing filter and tripod.

A narrow interior volume in downtown San Francisco turns verticality into its primary material. The space rises quietly, guided by converging wall planes and a restrained palette that keeps attention focused on proportion, texture, and light rather than spectacle. What holds the eye are the suspended wire spheres overhead—luminous, precise, and slightly otherworldly—hovering like drawn constellations against a patterned backdrop.

The walls read as disciplined and architectural, their subtle diagonal seams reinforcing a sense of measured ascent. The floor remains deliberately calm, a neutral base that lets the composition breathe. Light here is not dramatic but intentional: warm enough to soften the metal latticework, cool enough to maintain clarity and separation between surfaces. The result is a balanced interior that feels contemporary without chasing novelty.

This kind of space is quintessentially San Francisco in its restraint. It favors thoughtfulness over excess, design literacy over decoration. There’s a quiet confidence at work—an understanding that geometry, repetition, and material honesty can carry an entire room when handled with care. The composition rewards a centered viewpoint, where symmetry and alignment create a moment of visual stillness amid the city’s usual pace.

Seen through an architectural lens, the scene becomes less about function and more about pause: a brief interlude where light, structure, and proportion align. It’s an interior moment that reflects San Francisco’s ongoing dialogue between modern design and understated urban elegance—meant to be noticed slowly, and remembered just as quietly.

The sun-approaching Comet ISON floats against a seemingly infinite backdrop of

numerous galaxies and a handful of foreground stars. The icy visitor, with its

long gossamer tail, appears to be swimming like a tadpole through a deep pond

of celestial wonders.

In reality, the comet is much, much closer. The nearest star to the Sun is over

60,000 times farther away, and the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way is over

thirty billion times more distant. These vast dimensions are lost in this deep

space Hubble exposure that visually combines our view of the universe from the

very nearby to the extraordinarily far away.

In this composite image, background stars and galaxies were separately photographed in red and yellow-green light. Because the comet moved between exposures relative to the background objects, its appearance was blurred. The blurred comet photo was replaced with a single, black-and-white exposure.

The images were taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on April 30, 2013.

A corner deli -- there's one like this right outside my workplace, though without the giant sandwich sign.

Built these last year as a white backdrop for photographing another MOC, and was hoping to keep them around for more shoots. But now I need the white parts, so I took a few photos before taking these apart.

Just your mountain silhouette with another amazing sunset backdrop.

As much as Hong Kong is known for its bad pollution and weather, you can't discount that Hong Kong has its fair share of its own amazing sunsets.

Working on “Frozen” these past couple of weeks .

As darkness gradually descends, the embers of a dying sunset form a golden backdrop to the Carquinez Bridge and the Training Ship Golden Bear as they settle in for the night. Eric Dugan had found a program that allows one to determine where the sun will set in relation to various localities. Using that program on his smart phone, he determined that we could get some shots of the sun setting behind the Carquinez Bridge if we positioned ourselves along the Carquinez Strait just east of the town of Crockett. We drove out to the location and scrambled down a hillside as the sun was going down to capture this shot.

The San Francisco Bay Area certainly has a lot of beautiful sunsets. Perhaps that's why I enjoy photographing sunsets so much!

As of yet, I've had little time to occupy myself with flickr, but I should have more time for it from the end of the next week !

I'd never really looked at the National Gallery before, somehow it blends into the backdrop of Trafalgar Square amongst the other equally grand buildings. One advantage of wandering round with a camera is it gives you a good excuse to look at everything in detail making me realise just how wonderful the Corinthian column capitals of the front portico really are.

From Wikipedia : "The National Gallery is an art museum on Trafalgar Square, London, United Kingdom. Founded in 1824, it houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900[a]. The gallery is an exempt charity, and a non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the main collection (though not some special exhibitions) is free of charge......

The present building, the third to house the National Gallery, was designed by William Wilkins from 1832–8. Only the façade onto Trafalgar Square remains essentially unchanged from this time, as the building has been expanded piecemeal throughout its history. "
