Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces (Longsheng)

The Longsheng Rice Terraces (simplified Chinese: 龙胜梯田; traditional Chinese: 龍勝梯田; pinyin: Lóngshèng Tītián) are located in Longsheng County, about 100 km (2 hours drive) from Guilin, Guangxi, China. The most popular are Ping An Rice Terrace and Jinkeng Rice Terrace.

The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top, the highest part being 880 m in elevation while the lowest part is 380 m. The coiling line that starts from the mountain foot up to the mountain top divides the mountain into layers of water glittering in the sun in spring, layers of green rice shoots in summer, layers of golden rice in fall, and layers of silvery frost in winter. At its beginning of Yuan Dynasty, the terraced fields were mostly built during the Ming Dynasty, about 500 years ago.

Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Terraced Rice Fields received their name because the rice terraces resemble a dragon's scales, while the summit of the mountain range looks like the backbone of the dragon. Visitors standing on the top of the mountain can see the dragon's backbone twisting off into the distance. In an early morning, when the weather is fine, the sunrise on the summit of Longji Rice Terraces is magnificent.

They are often considered most beautiful in early June. At this time, water is pumped over the rice paddies and young plants are transferred to the main terraces.

Larger images of both because I wasn't sure if I liked them together more or if I liked them better separated.

Everytime I go to Backbone I find something old and something new. This was Iowa's first state park and a destination I visit as often as I can.

Way back there beyond the aspens, well off highway 12 @ Boulder or Escalante, Utah - this one lane bridge can be found by a graded dirt road. Not this exact bridge. I think it's been reconstructed, as wooded little bridges across deep, granite gorges do not last that long in these harsh elements. The area surrounding is Dixie National Forest

On Saturday night about 10:00 PM Oregon, IL Fire was dispatched to train derailment at Pines Rd. near Devil's Backbone. A string of empty sand cars being stored on the Mt. Morris branch line West of Gale Rd. rolled down hill and hit the derail on the north side of Pines Rd. The derail did its job and 17 of the 99 cars in the string derailed. The cars came to rest in a pile mostly north of Pines, a few cars did end up in the road way. Luckily no vehicles were passing at the time and no one was injured. The Mt. Morris line is operated by Illinois Railway (OmniTrax) and their officials arrived quickly to access the damage. Maggio's of Rockford started showing up with their parade of equipment and worked through the night and the majority of the next day righting cars and getting the road open. I am sure the heavy rain, high winds and rapidly dropping temperatures made job even harder.

For musically talented Barossa Valley local, Sam Brittain, story-telling is exactly that. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Our Shining Skin’ on June 1, 2012, the path to success for the gifted and independent musician has transformed into a never-ending road. First picking up a guitar at the age of three and additionally turning his hand to the piano and drums,

In 2013, Sam is an unstoppable, roots, folk and blues artist, reminiscent of sounds such as Damien Rice, Glen Hansard and Ryan Adams. Sam supported close friend and musical influence, Mike Rosenberg (Passenger) at Adelaide-based Fowlers Live, as an integral part of Mike’s ‘All the Little Lights’ album tour, a highlight of Sam’s career to date.

The recording of ‘Our Shining Skin’ saw Sam and his band work endlessly with the talented Barossa-based Jamie Blechynden of Stella Studios and VJ productions. Supported by BJ Barker (drums), Steve Flemming (bass) and Glen Wagland (engineer), tracking the backbone of all 12 songs took a mere two days to complete. ‘Our Shining Skin’ quickly earned impressive reviews and was labelled as a ‘formidable and wide spreading resume’ for Sam (Timber and Steel, August, 2012).

Kicking off an Australian tour, Sam officially released the highly anticipated album at a sold out show on June 9, 2012, held at the Chateau’s acoustically brilliant ‘Long Room’. In June and July 2012, Sam crossed the country, delighting crowds and building his fan base in Melbourne, Hobart, Darwin and Adelaide, including an unforgettable sold out show with Sam’s full band at the prominent Adelaide venue, the Promethean Theatre on September 27, 2012.

Marking the beginning of what’s set to be a milestone year and following a hugely successful first tour, Sam’s lead single ‘Bruises’ hit #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Roots Chart on New Year’s Eve, 2012/13, where it consolidated its lead for a consecutive four weeks, peaking at #6 in the Overall Top 100.

2013 saw Sam embark on a 16 date tour once again supporting new age folk music legend Mike Rosenberg (Passenger).

Soooo I'm in Colorado. Arrived yesterday and drove up to Estes Park by myself to hike and relax and distract my mind before my interviews tomorrow. After two gorgeous hikes in almost white-out conditions, I headed back to Denver on US 34, Big Thompson Canyon, the bestest way to get to and from Estes Park.

Just before getting to Loveland, there's a striking rock feature that sticks up in the middle of grasslands. It's called Devil's Backbone and I've always wanted to stop. So today I did. And it's really cool! I didn't explore much because it was getting late, but the ridges are pretty sweet. Also the howling coyotes really started to creep me out.

On to tomorrow.... (starting to get nervous!)

Lots more pictures too, eventually :)

For a podular system to work, cultural and technical standards are imperative. This means that a pod’s autonomy does not extend to choices in shared standards and protocols. This kind of system needs a strong backbone that clearly articulates those standards and provides a mechanism for evolving them when necessary.

For small and large companies alike, the most advantageous standards are those that are most widely adopted, because those standards will allow you to plug in more easily to the big wide world – and the big wide world always offers more functionality, better and more cheaply than you can build it yourself. Backbone activities are about coordination and consistency, so the best way to organize them may not be podular. When it comes to language, protocols, culture and values, you don’t want variability, you want consistency. Consistency in standards is an absolute requirement if you want to enable autonomous units.

Backbone decisions can be dictated from above (for example, the way Apple dictates standards for its App Store) or agreed by consensus (for example, the way Web standards are developed). What’s most important about backbone decisions is that they focus on the connections between pods rather than within pods In other words, a pod can do what it likes internally, but when it shares or receives information it needs to speak the same language as other pods.

The future is podular.
