A good time was had by most. The kids were so grumpy about the weather and let us know. Major implosion at the Chik'n Shack, or whatever it's called, in Strawberry Point leads to removal of ice cream privileges and general malaise.
Backbone Campaign and the sHellNo Action Council trained over 200 Kayaktivists which led to 300+ people taking their Paddles to Elliot Bay to protest Shell Oil's arctic destroying and climate wrecking plans.

Also known as Bukit Tabur to locals, the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge is the longest quartz dyke in the world. Due to it's sheer size and shape, people have said that it resembles a dragon's backbone. Spanning between 14 to 22km, it is a unique site with the quartz here consisting of types of quartz formations.
The part of the Ridge surrounding the dam and forest reserve is rich with vegetation. Surveys indicate at least 265 plant species thrive here, with five of them endemic to the area. Hence, conservationists have reasons to fear for their future. Currently, only its inaccessibility is ensuring its survival.
This area is also the habitat of a rare animal, the serow which is a kind of mountain goat. A National Parks and Wildlife Department survey carried out in 1985 found the tracks of five serows, but it's anyone's guess how many exist today.

Unfortunately, due to its closeness to Kuala Lumpur, and increasing demand for land to house the city's growing population, the foothills at the ridge have always been under intense development pressure. Not only have clearings for agricultural settlements taken over much of its western slopes, but new residential and industrial areas are also earmarked.
In 2010, the government came up with a plan to construct a highway that cuts through the lower part of the ridge This development plan would definitely endanger this unique area and it's ecosystem.
The link below is a link to an online petition started by locals to try and urge the government to protect this area and if possible one day gazette this area as a UNESCO Heritage Site.
I would be grateful if you spend a minutes to sign the petition so that we can do our bit to preserve the natural beauty of the world.

A Sculpture in Bristol UK. It is situated on the edge of Millennium Square and the Harbourside. It is Usually orange in colour but thought I would give it a different feel.
Ubiquitous in the Warrington fleet is the Wright Cadet bodywork - though the earlier examples are badged as Merits. Forget the smart* red moquette seating of the latest new vehicles: the technicolour-vomit patterns and colourful interior posters are what helped propel the company to UK Bus Operator of the Year 2008, and long may such sartorial concerns serve the town!

The snow really started melting around 10:00 a.m. I took Anna to school and after I dropped her off, I stopped at the Devil's Backbone Memorial on FM 32 to take some photos. You can see a little snow on the crosses hanging on the fence. It was about 10:45 a.m. at this point and a lot of the snow was already gone.
She is the calmest person I know. The kindest person I know. The wisest of my friends. You can see it in her eyes, you can hear it in her voice, you can spot it in the way she moves. Her inner beauty reflects on her outlook. I wish you could see her fragile pulchritude too.
This is photo (and many others like it to come) is a family collaboration. Several months ago, a client of mine was interested in some fun western themed shots of toys so I searched and searched for some vintage Cowboys & Indians type toys but never found any that inspired me. So I bought some cheap plastic figures and my husband (an artist) volunteered to paint them. Then my son painted some too! Finally, we went out to the mountains of New Mexico last week where my son and I set up some shots. Talk about fun!
(Pssst. This is really fun on black, so press L.)

Everytime I go to Backbone I find something old and something new. This was Iowa's first state park and a destination I visit as often as I can.

This is the picnic area and rest stop where the Devil's Backbone Memorial is located. It really was a beautiful morning.

Shantamani Muddaiah's Backbone is a culptural installation in the shape of a large spinal column. The backbone is a metaphor for the centripetal forces that hold civilizations together, from rivers to ideologies. Made of cinder, the combusted remains of coal, the 90-foot-long installation lies curled on the ground like a giant sea serpent, prompting questions about its origin.
There is a two mile strip through the centre of Birmingham UK which, with a lot of luck and a following wind will demonstrate the exciting possibilities for urban living when it is completed, if it is completed, in about fifteen years - my estimate. It will contain three universities, a conservatoire, four or five shopping malls, theatres, concert halls, several railway stations and also a mass transit tram network. And a state of the art hospital. Much of this is already in place. If battery power for cars and other vehicles comes on stream it may also contain clean air.
It may also be the hub for the HS2 network, in the shape of a new Curzon Street station. The original Curzon Street Station was central Birmingham's first, built in 1838. It's a fair bet that there were a fair few Murphys' involved in building that station, too.
At the moment it must be said there are Buddleia bushes all over this vast site as some future photos will demonstrate. But I live in hope.
