Spitter (or the one i think is Spitter) was still sitting in front of the observation window, casually observing the humans.
Just beyond the window there's an entrance into an indoor area for the chimps. To my human eyes, this indoor area looks a lot darker and bleaker and totally unappealing compared to the covered area down the other end of the enclosure. Maybe the chimps feel the same way. I havent seen the chimps spending much time in here. Sitting outside the window like Spitter: yes. Or sitting on the doorstep, yep. Using the area as an indoor toilet, yep. Oh and later on this same day i did see Sasha go inside with her son Sule, and sit hidden (hidden from chimps, not humans) up in a dark corner while she let Sule suckle. Maybe she was avoiding someone. Chimp politics are so complex.
If the time comes when the keepers have to split the enclosure into two separate areas, it's going to come as a shock to the chimps who've had access to all areas. This indoor area might get a bit more use when the chimps have no other choice

After church service while visiting friends I saw a couple BBQ grill/smokers over in the corner of the parking lot. This one just needs a 'Lil TLC before she's fired back up.

Tonight was the first night back to Choir! Choir! Choir! since mid-December and I knew I missed the singing, the company, the comedy and spontaneous running off into the occasional other song but tonight made me realize I *really* missed it!
Sorry this is blurry but I was probably trying not to laugh - I know everyone else was and that it's hard to get Daveed and Nobu to not be animated.
We sang Madonna's Material Girl (aka Material Grrl ;p) and La Isla Bonita tonight. Can't wait for next week already!

Of the thing that Andrew brought back from his trip to Japan, the one I'm most excited about was a bag of leftovers from James Hoffmann's performance. Though I haven't found out all the details, I'm told that this was the coffee he used for his milk based drinks and that it is a Kenyan, I'm assuming the Gethumbwini which I've only ever had once before at Ritual.
I have no idea how old this coffee is.
I was also a little surprised by the roast level, which to my mind looked pretty dark, perhaps several seconds into second crack. (see the following photos)
Drop some beans into the DRM, and after a quick calibration, I was getting some beautifully reddish-orange crema. Again, I have no idea how old these beans are. It's interesting to note that not only did they have to travel from Kenya to the UK in green form, but then from the UK to Japan and then to Santa Rosa California in roasted form. These beans have seen some miles.
Thus it was surprising to me that I was still able to pour a pleasingly delicious shot. To my palate, the flavors focus on candied citrus. With the milk, a heavenly 50-50 bar. So good I ran through the rest of the bag making caps for the office.
I'm sure the Hoff has some special magic when it comes to his drinks, so the fact that I could make a cap that presented so well tells me there is something in these beans that defies a darker roast level.
Congrats to James and crew, on their success in Japan and thanks also for being generous with your leftovers!
