An image shot at York Railway Station, in the former Signal Box, now a Coffee shop, and an LNER Azuma train.

The book is ‘I wanna be yours’ by John Cooper Clarke (and is fantastic), coffee was nice too.

LNER's 1E13 0755 Inverness to London Kings Cross service sweeps through Glen Truim at Crubenmore towards Dalwhinnie.

The Highland scenery at this time of year is enhanced by the sight of the heather in full bloom; the precious few on board not looking at their phones no doubt appreciative.

Azuma 800107 does the honours.

A threatening sky looms to the North East, but the low winter sun still shines catching Azuma 800109 racing south.

1E17 Edinburgh Waverly to London Kings Cross. LNER Azuma train unit 801207, which was given a special livery in January 2025 to celebrate the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway. The train's livery, known as the "Darlington" livery, includes the name "Darlington" and an image of the historic Locomotion No. 1 locomotive to mark the 200th anniversary of the first passenger journey on the S&DR. Seen here heading south on the ECML skirting the North Sea at Lamberton just north of the English border.

Having walked out to this location on the ECML at Marshall Meadows, i wanted to do something with the sign. the area is very cluttered, and the sign on the coast side is missing one half, so this was the only angle I could use. I took a photo of the sign and then layered over the Azuma and flipped the other.

London North Eastern Railway (LNER) 9-coach Azuma crossing the Royal Border Bridge at Berwick-upon-Tweed on the East Coast Main Line on 11 September 2025.

The Royal Border Bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson, was constructed between 1847 and 1850 to complete the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Officially opened by Queen Victoria's visit on 29 August 1850, it was initially called the 'Tweed Viaduct' but was renamed to the "Royal Border Bridge" by the Queen herself.

With Stirling Castle and old town nicely illuminated with a spotlight of sunshine perfectly timed just an LNER Azuma rounds the bend towards Bannockburn. No photoshopped merging of images on this one.

This being a Sunday, not many trains ran due to a Scotrail strike, I did manage to capture, a northbound Azuma along with a DRS Tesco freight, all put together in a short Youtube Vid.

The arrival or departure of services in Kings X always produces a good number of passengers who require assistance. Many will be tourists who aren't familiar with our rail procedures.

1E11 Aberdeen to London Kings Cross. Class 800 Bi-Mode Azuma in LNER livery seen here heading south on the ECML crossing the Royal Border Bridge. 800104 is notable for being the first Azuma to operate on the flagship Flying Scotsman service on the 1st of August 2019, specifically on the 05:40 service from Edinburgh to London King's Cross. This particular train also features a modified "Celebrating Scotland" livery, including a custom LNER tartan.

Passengers aboard LNER's 5.30pm Thursdays-only service from London Kings Cross - Edinburgh Waverley (1S27), in the hands of Azuma unit 801203, get the opportunity to spend an evening south of the border instead seeing as the train has been terminated at Newcastle.

Helpfully it's still well before closing time and, with plentiful vibrant bars and clubs within a short walk of the station, a 'night on the toon' might not be such a bad alternative.

Class 800 Azuma in LNER livery heads south over the Tay Bridge with a Aberdeen to London Kings X service. Its been over 3 years since I done this location so it was on the cards again. Dundee in the Background and the hills behind the City really does show Scotland at its best.

Engineering works on the East Coast Mainline meant services were diverted along the Durham Coast line. LNER Azuma Nos. 801109 & 800209 pass the long abandoned Greatham station working 1E03, the 06:30 Edinburgh – London Kings Cross service on 1 March 2025.

One of the attractive things when photographing railway events in Scotland is the amount of infrastructure and trackside furniture still in place.

The Highland Chieftain heads towards Newtonmore operated by an Azuma Class 800 number 107. The evening approaches as a patch of sunlight illuminates the 1200 Kings Cross to Inverness.

The row of electricity supply poles makes for an interesting feature as they disappear into the distance.

In the glory of York Station.

“Our newly named Azuma train, Our Planet, is now travelling the East Coast route as a reminder of the benefits of choosing rail to our customers. Data shows that LNER trains produce fifteen times less CO2 than flying and seven times less than driving. In 2024, we were the first operator to use a partially bio-based product to apply new wraps to the outside of our trains and have since made a pledge to use the most environmentally sustainable materials available when applying any new livery”.

This information is from LNER online. Shot taken at Newark Northgate Station just as the train was departing North!

Darkness descends over Inverness as LNER Azuma Class 800 No. 800107 sits in the fuel bay having arrived from London Kings Cross a while earlier. 19th July 2021.

The excellent railway photography book '50 Years of Phoenix' is now available – click on this link to view selected pages in the book and perhaps even order a copy: www.mortonsbooks.co.uk/product/view/productCode/15554

Also, why not take a look at the PRPC web site at www.phoenix-rpc.co.uk/index.html.

No doubt these units will be the face of high speed rail travel in the UK for many years to come.

This one goes back a a few months prior to the introduction of the Azuma units on the East Coast mainline and shows 800 104 heading north at Barnby Moor on a glorious spring afternoon.
