Azuma 800 Class have now replaced the HST units on the East Coast Main Line. The HST Intercity units will be sadly missed after serving the railway network admirably since 1975.
Azuma unit 801201 races north though Morpeth with LNER's 11.30am London Kings Cross - Edinburgh service (1S15).
Shot at 1/6s @ F22, and 100asa. Not for everyone.
Definitely the last upload for a bit 😂

Yesterday I saw two Azumas within minutes of each other, this one was heading to York. This photo had a grey trackside cabinet at the bottom which has been removed with photoshop.
I was lucky with the sun in this photo, it only came back as the train was half way up the straight ahead. This is my favourite location and angle to take photos at Colton Junction near York.
Passing the ECML Halfway sign, LNER Azuma 800108 speeds north pretty much halfway between London and Edinburgh with 1W20 the 14:00 London Kings Cross to Aberdeen.
An image was taken on my recent visit and YouTube video from the ECML taking in the old LNER milepost signs, the 200 miles to Edinburgh and this the Halfway sign.

Taken from the bridge over Sleaford Road, looking south. This one was a stopping train, just slowing down on its approach to Newark Northgate station and then heading northwards on the East Coast Main Line.
To celebrate pride month, LNER Azuma No.801226 is carrying rainbow decals and is seen at Broad Fen Lane, Claypole working 1S21 14:30 London Kings Cross - Edinburgh. 09-06-2023.
800107 runs through Wylam and forms a matching pair with my earlier picture of D9000 Royal Scots Grey. The Azuma was on the East Coast Diversion and was working the 1E13 0941 Edinburgh to Kings Cross.
An Azuma EMU passes Burnmouth whilst working 1W11, 1000 London Kings Cross - Aberdeen, 20 March 2020
A lot of modern trains look just the same at the rear as they do at the front! This is a shot of the London bound Azuma High Speed Train just leaving Newark Northgate Station, heading south towards its final destination, London.

It's obvious where this is, halfway between London and Edinburgh on the ECML, all's not what it seems though, with artistic licence I've flipped both the sign and the LNER logo on the Azuma.
Taken on my trip to the 200 mile and halfway signs on the ECML, there's a video here. youtu.be/qIcqXpv8DLI

Intended to replace the ageing and outdated 125 HST, High Speed Trains, these Azuma units are bi-mode EMUs or Electric Multiple Units. Bi-mode means that they operate on Diesel generators where no overhead electric cables are available for the electric traction.
Crossing the misty Leeds - Liverpool canal at Armley, Leeds an unidentified LNER Azuma glides through the mist with an Empty Stock move to Harrogate.

I’ve digitally reached into the canal and removed some floating debris close to the Azuma shadow.

I’m proud to be a member of the Phoenix Railway Photographic circle and equally honoured to be awarded ‘Photographer of the year’ in this anniversary year, this image was one of my 5 images submitted for the photographer of the year.
2021 represents a significant milestone in the history of the Phoenix Railway-Photographic Circle with the celebration of our 50th anniversary. Phoenix was set up in spring 1971 and was created to promote an alternative approach to railway photography. Why not take a look at the PRPC web site at www.phoenix-rpc.co.uk/index.html
I do enjoy all genres of photography and railways are no exception. My father & grandfather worked on the railways and my personal experience of being with grandad in Meadow Lane signal Box (Sneinton Nott'm) as a steam loco came through that was quite an unforgettable experience. As too was this close quarters encounter at Christon Bank as a high speed Azuma service to Edinburgh thundered passed me as I stood ready with camera to capture the moment.

LNER's 1W16 1200 London Kings Cross to Inverness Azuma service sweeps round the curve on the southern approach to Blackford on a fine autumnal evening. Set 800102 forms the service.

In preparation for ECML diverts next month, Azuma 800210 is working route learner/refresher 5Z80 08:05 Doncaster Carr Iep Depot - Peterborough at Holdingham Lane, Sleaford. 28-09-2022.

With overnight heavy rain giving way to brighter conditions it became worthwhile heading out for the final day of Tyne Valley diversions for the year.
Here 800106 is seen passing through Bardon Mill with the diverted 1W10 0930 London Kings Cross to Inverness. The train was terminated at Perth due to high winds.

The ghost of Azuma.
With a slow shutter speed, the nose of LNER 801111 gives a ghosting effect departing Doncaster, whilst Northern 331102 awaits departure with a following train the Leeds.

The Sun set in the East last night as 1E25 Edinburgh Waverley - London Kings Cross reflects the last of the light back off its bodyside at Creeton. 'Azuma' 800108 is the EMU set working and 'Azuma' is an archaic Japenese word for 'East'
LNER Azura 801201 blasts under bridge 13 on the Selby Diversion section of the East Coast Main Line, even though its Bridge 13 this was a lucky shot. At 125mph I didn’t think I’d be able to get a shot here, but one lucky frame just about gave the image I was looking for, the frame before didn’t have any train and the next was probably half way down the train, the slow burst is one of my main criticisms of the Canon EOS-R.
This image is from an hour or so sent one Sunday afternoon alongside the East Coast Main line around Hambleton Junction, near Selby, this and a few more images appear in my latest YouTube video.

Azuma 800114 with 1E13 crosses the viaduct at Moy with LNER's 07.55 Inverness to London Kings Cross service.
The bridge is made of wood, the weak foundations do not allow construction from concrete or steel.
Despite the 4.30AM start and patient wait whilst the trains stopped for press photos, This was the moment I realised I wasn't going to get a photo of 4 trains in formation. The Azuma set off far quicker than the other trains and gained a full train length before it passed us. Flying Scotsman, a HST and a 225 can be seen in the distance.
800107 seen at Cromwell working the 1A40 1536 Harrogate - London Kings Cross 23/8/21. (Taken using a few sections of the pole)
1S15 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. Class 801 Azuma in LNER livery arrives into Darlington Station on the ECML. Seen here under the spectacular roof with the rays of sun beating in through the windows.
Azuma unit 801201 gingerly approaches Newcastle station with LNER's Sunday-only 2.50pm Edinburgh Waverley - London Kings Cross service (1E98).
The shot, taken from St Nicholas Street, almost didn't make the cut but just about a year down the line I figured it had some merit. The road runs straight on to the High Level Bridge which, on the top-deck, carries the railway line to Gateshead - it is open to authorised vehicles only though.
Of course, the star of the show is the Castle and, with words taken straight from the website : “Steeped in history, this Norman fortress is a rugged reminder of northern England’s turbulent past and where the city of Newcastle got its name" - it's well worth a visit.

The dual-mode Azuma 800 109 of the London North Eastern Railway is on its way as C82169 from Aberdeen to London Kings Cross. Close to Edinburgh, the train passes what is without doubt the most impressive engineering structure on the journey - the formidable railway bridge over the Firth of Forth. It was observed from the shore at South Queensferry.
An LNER Azuma and vintage Flying Scotsman 60103 at Peterborough station.
Amazing to see the evolution of trains from steam and so happy to see the vintage trains on track.
