Diverse group of azaleas in flower. Washington National Arboretum.

Azaleas are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsuji (evergreen) and Pentanthera (deciduous). Azaleas bloom in spring, their flowers often lasting several weeks. Shade tolerant, they prefer living near or under trees. They are part of the family Ericaceae.

In addition to being renowned for its beauty, the azalea is also highly toxic—it contains andromedotoxins in both its leaves and nectar, including honey from the nectar. Azaleas and rhododendrons were once so infamous for their toxicity that to receive a bouquet of their flowers in a black vase was a well-known death threat.

Dear friends, thank you all for your views, comments and faves!

Another macro shot using a simple magnifier. This flower is simply wonderful!

A photograph I’ve kept for a while but not put on Flickr. It’s from the open day at Stody Lodge where there’s a mesmerising display of rhododendrons and azaleas. I’ve tried several times to add tags but they keep disappearing. I’ll keep trying.

Lovely Red Azaleas. Hope you like them!

Azaleas /əˈzeɪliə/ are flowering shrubs in the genus Rhododendron, particularly the former sections Tsutsuji (evergreen) and Pentanthera (deciduous). Azaleas bloom in the spring (May and June in the temperate Northern Hemisphere, and December and January in the Southern Hemisphere),[1] their flowers often lasting several weeks. Shade tolerant, they prefer living near or under trees. They are part of the family Ericaceae.

Meaning of Azaleas:

Throughout the world, this flower stands for love and gentleness, making it perfect to give to a loved one for any occasion. The azalea speaks of taking care of yourself and everlasting beauty, which is exemplified in this plant’s long life not only as a houseplant, but also as a cheery addition to your yard or garden.

Happy Mother's Day!

The first late winter/early spring bloom in my backyard following rain.

Azaleas are arguably the Southern U.S.A.’s favorite shrubs. They are closely allied to Rhododendrons, which have larger leaves and the blooms are bell shaped, as opposed to the funnel shape of the azalea. They are already in full bloom in the Houston area.
