India’s General Election results were counted on June 4th, 2024. Over 600 million people voted, out of over 900 million eligible voters. The voting process took more than a month, over 7 different phases.

India’s government runs on a parliamentary system, headed by a Prime Minister. There are 543 seats in parliament, and whichever party controls the majority of seats forms the government. Parties can form alliances to win the majority. The two major alliances in this election were the National Democratic Alliance, led by the incumbent Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A.), headed by the Indian National Congress.

Throughout the campaign, India’s incumbent BJP forecasted that they would get 400 out of the 543 Parliamentary seats. But on counting day, BJP lost many of the seats it had won in the previous general election in 2019.

Opposition parties had a lot of unexpected wins across the country. One in particular came when the Samajwadi Party candidate beat the BJP in Faizabad, the constituency that included the city of Ayodhya. The BJP bet on winning in Ayodhya after inaugurating the Ram Mandir in the city on the site of a mosque that was demolished in 1992.

From early trends based on the counting of votes, BJP’s National Democratic Alliance seemed likely to form the government.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi celebrated the wins by the I.N.D.I.A. alliance in a press conference, saying that the success of the alliance was a sign that the country wants change in how things are run by the incumbent party.

08/10/2003Friends, .

Yes «self proclaimed Marxist intellectuals" the reality bites and it bites in a very bitter way. .

This is what ~s noticed off late in your issueless, baseless debates about Ayodhya and the ASI .

report. There is a palpable sense of loss among the "Marxist self proclaimed secular intellectuals" .

about the findings of the Ayodhya excavations. .

It is time for professors like lrfan Habib, Romilia Thapar and others to wind up their politically motivated "historical" debate~ about Indian Hist~ry a~d come ~o terms with the reality or else the day is not very far when they Will be swept away 1n thts great trde of cultural nationalism which has .

engulfed the whole of India in a divine embrace. The ASI report has confirmed the Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) survey of the Tojo Vikas International conducted in December 2002. Significant findings of the ASI reports can be briefly summarised as follows: .

'The earliest excavation shows northern Black Polished Ware of the first millennium B.C. Main diagnostic trait of the period besides the grey, black slipped and red wares, is a round signit with legend in Asokan Brahmi which is assigned to circa 1003 B.C. to 300 B.C." (AS I Report on Ayodhya). .

"Significant findings of the Sunga and Kushan period (Second Century B.C. to third Century .

A. D.) includes a typical terra cotta mother goddess, animal figurines, beads hairpins etc.'J (AS I Report). tiThe advent of Guptas (fourth to sixth century A.D.) did bring a qualitative change in building activity. Significant findings of this period include typical terracotta figurines and a copper coin with the legend Sri Chandra (Gupta) in it". (ASI Reports). .

..Post-Gupta-Rajput period findings (seventh to tenth century A.D.) in the trenches include a damaged northern wall retaining a provision for Pranala, i.e. waterchute which is a distinct feature of contemporary temple of that period known from the Ganga-Yamuna plain". (ASI Reports). .

"Early medieval period (eleventh-twelfth century A.D.) findings include 50 pillar bases and a existence of a massive and monumental structure having a minimum dimension of 50x30m in north-south and east-west direction below the disputed structure. Findings of this period include a mutilated sculpture of a divine coupe, carved architectural members like Pranala, Lotus Motif, Circular Shrine, Kapolapali Doorjamb, Black Schist Pillar, Amaloka etc.~~ (ASI Reports). .

Some of the above quoted findings of the ASI reports clearly shows that the Sabri structure was built after destroying a huge ancient temple. These so called "progressive Marxist Scholars" like lrfan Habib should respect the writing on the walls and come forward by helping both the parties in solving the dispute peacefully instead adding fuel to the fire. If scholars like Habib cannot understand the religious meaning of a Lotus Motifs, Kapolapali Doo~ams etc.then one has to really shed tears at their intellectual capability. Instead of crying foul over the ASI Reports people like Habib should castigate anti-national people like Imam Bukhari who openly support the terrorist acts of the Sept. 11 and Bin Laden. Any ways what else one can expect from these politically motivated Marxist scholars like Habib and Thapar after all they are the sophisticated faces of the ideology of Marxist-Islamic fundamentalism in India. .
