On December 22, 1949, the idol of Ramlalla was placed in the Babri Masjid (mosque) premises in Ayodhya and on December 6, 1992, the Babri Masjid was demolished. During this interval of more than 40 years whatever happened publicly is known, but most people are unaware of what kept happening behind the curtain. Here is a first hand account by the editor of a daily published from Faizabad, who has been an eye-witness to numerous activities that took place backstage and publicly. Many Prime Ministers, opposition politicians, journalists and activists have been dependant on him for information. Yesterday, terrorists breached the security cordon at Ayodhya and tried to assault the makeshift temple there. In 1992, it was the terrorist brigades of the Sangh Parivar, led by Advani and Joshi, who, helped by the BJP CM of UP; stormed the security cordon and destroyed the Babri Masjid. That terrorist action was followed by massive bloodshed by the Sangh all over India. This latest terrorist action too can benefit no-one but the Sangh Parivar. Terrorists seem to be great friends of the BJP; how come, every time the BJP is in a crisis, terrorists dish up a timely attack?! Recall -the Parliament attack happened just in time to help the Vajpayee Govt. bulldoze POTA thr6ugh. Even today, there has been no satisfactory explanation for how those terrorists managed to enter the premises of Indian Parliament. Modi was battling factionalism within the BJP: the Akshardham attack happened just in time to manage the crisis before Assembly elections. Today, there are several questions being raised about the Sangh's role .in the Godhra carnage too -and these questions are being raised, not by secularists alone, but by the ~amilies of kar s~vaks who died at Godhra. Modi and Advani are screaming for bring.ing back POTA-may we ask them how come POTA failed to prevent the Akshardham attack? The fact is that communal fascist forces like the Sangh have a vested int~rest in keeping terrorism alive: terrorism can be weeded out only if the terrorists of the Sanghi mobs too are weeded out. The ABVP leaflet sheds crocodile tears for the 'woes of lmrana'. May we ask them ·why they are silent about innumerable instances of caste panchayats that declare deaths sentences for Hindu couples who marry outside caste and community, that parade Dalit women naked, and that sentence women to gangrape as punishment? Are these in any way less medieval and anti-woman than the fatwa against lmrana? The lmrana episode is not a commentary on any particular community -it is part of the systematic denial of justice to women in our society, be it by caste and community panchayats, or be it by the nation's judiciary! The Sangh Parivar, the BJP and the ABVPshould be warned-the nation has condemned the attack at Ayodhya, and the same nation will not tolerate any attempt to recreate the Gujarat genocide. AISA condemns the violence, vandalism and destruction of public property that BJP and VHP activists indulge in today in the name of enforcing their 'protest bandh'. .
